Partially Deafened

Last night Blake and I went down to San Antonio again, this time for the Chimaira show. Since last time we went to this venue, "doors at 7" meant "music at 9:30" we opted to leave somewhat later. Consequently, we missed the first band, Divine Heresy. Considering the usual quality of openers when there are 4 bands involved, we probably didn't miss much.

The first band we saw was Terror, which is apparently a hardcore band. They were, in my opinion, pretty bad. However, they were very amusing in that they just let fans on stage and gave them the mic a lot. There was so much movement and people getting up and down off the stage that I wasn't completely sure which people were in the band for a while.

Next up was Kataklysm which I probably just spelled wrong. Their performance was marred by multiple equipment failures, but they were pretty good. They even dedicated "Crippled and Broken" to the PA system. They did the classic metal hair twirling maneuver, always a plus for death metal bands.

Chimaira was of course awesome. They actually set up their light system, which I didn't really expect. In the small area, the strobes were totally blinding. They also apparently decided when determining how much fog to use to go all in. There was so much fog initially that the band was no more than a group of shadowy figures, which I thought was neat. Their set included an incredibly long instrumental section in which their vocalist took up a guitar and played along. Last time we saw them he didn't come anywhere near a guitar, but apparently he proficient at it in addition to going "ooOOOOAAAH" and "eeeeeeeAAAAAAAAARR". That segued into "Six", the one track off Resurrection Blake and I both really hoped they would play, but didn't know if they would since it's so long. Overall, a very good show.
