Last night Blake and I were talking about staged explosive propulsion after reading about the Operation Plumbbob test launching a manhole cover past solar escape velocity (estimated at ~56 km/s vs. solar escape of ~43km/s). Scientifically speaking, the likely scenario for astroid impact will be many hitting at the same time. If you follow this particular brand of estachology, they come from the oort cloud due to the near-passing of our sun's twin, nicknamed Nemesis. There's actually a lot of literature available if your interested.
