Part of working with NASA is dealing with acronyms. At some point my boss told me to write a design document for the project that I have been working on. Because I find writing documentation boring, to amuse myself I decided to try to use as many acronyms as I could, and try to stack them. I have a lot of help since the project I'm working on is an application for SCOUT, which I'm pretty sure some PR guy came up with and then filled in the letters because Science Crew Operations Utility Testbed does not really mean anything or describe what the vehicle does at all. I decided by finally naming my tool something, the SCOUT Power Awareness Tool (SPAT).
I've previously posted about the OMG and their CORBA IDL. Since I'm actually using that It was easy enough to combine those into another acronym, the RTPS OMG CORBA IDL File (ROCIF). I didn't really need to include all that in there, but I find it amusing. Fully expanded that's the Real Time Power Server Object Management Group Common Object Request Broker Architecture Interface Definition Language File. Proofing my design document is funny too because every paragraph has a huge number of acronyms in it.
