Today was the culmination of weeks of work on the part of the fencing team officers in order to organize and put on a tournament that no other school wanted to do. Despite getting off to a poor start (it took us more than an hour to get our shit together and get pools started) we were still able to knock out the tournament before 6pm, a very good time for a SWIFA. We even had a larger turnout than we expected in foil (11 teams) and saber (7) at least. Epee had a measly turnout compared to times past, but there were still seven squads (though three of those were ours). The results confirmed what everyone already knew: TAMU epee and saber are unstoppable, but our foil team blows. Not to be disparaging to the members of the team, we just don't have any experienced members for foil anymore. Our team had one returning member and two fencers new this semester! They still managed to get 4th in the field, which says something for our ability to train new people, but they just can't compete with teams that have multiple rated foilists on them. Hopefully we'll be able to correct this problem. Anyway, we got 1st, 1st, 4th giving us an overall score just one point short of UT's 2nd, 2nd, 1st. This breaks a streak of overall victories for us.
For my part, in addition to organizing various aspects of the tournament, I was supposed to be captain of the TAMU B squad for epee. However, I got really hammered last night... and I got up this morning and was pretty hung-over. I vomited before I left, and managed to eat some breakfast but I was still all weak and shaky for most of the day. As a result of my idiocy, we were unable to beat UT's team in pools (I really should have had that guy) and had to be eliminated by our A squad in the first round of DEs. I fenced so bad today, it was horrible. I didn't really recover until something like 4 when we were fencing off for 3rd place.
So after the tournament was over and we'd cleaned up everything, the team went out to Kerri's Stacked Enchiladas to eat and watch the A&M v OSU game. We were all pleasantly surprised that the team was not just doing well, but in fact crushing OSU. At least in the first half anyway. Not that I was paying much attention to the game. Mostly I was chatting with Liz, Liz, and Dave. Though, at some point Patrick revealed to me that someone had asked him "Hey, why's that old guy fencing" (or something along those lines) in reference to me. Do I really look like an old guy? That's just what my self-esteem needs. Patrick and Bobby also convinced me to go to see Team America: World Police with them and most of the fencing team later.
That movie was pretty bad. It wasn't quite as stupid as I was lead to believe that it would be from commercials, but it still earns a 'fucking retarded' rating. Do not see Team America. There were about as many funny things in the movie as an average episode of South Park (like four or five), stretched out over a much longer period of time. Then, in all the time they were not being funny, they were being gay, and/or lame. I understand that a lot of it was lame on purpose for the purposes of comedy, but that's just not funny when done intentionally. Lame movies can only be funny if they are trying really hard to be serious and just failing really bad at it. The sad thing is that everyone else in the theater was cracking up at all their stupid, stupid jokes.
