There were so few episodes left by this point, but the genius writers at ATWT decided it was a good idea to waste one of them on the crappy Chris storyline. Reid is in it, but no Luke, and it's really hard to watch this clip without wanting to claw my eyes out, so forgive me if this recap isn't the most fun one ever.
We start at the hotel, where Bob and Kim are talking with John Dixon. Kim remarks on the fact that Bob and John can pick up an argument right where they left it years and year ago and asks how they do that. Bob says he's had some practice recently with another physician, and I think we all know who he's talking about. But in case we didn't, Bob goes on to say that it's a brilliant neurosurgeon with some "personality issues."
John asks if Bob's talking about Dr. Reid Oliver, and when Bob asks if John knows him, John confirms that he's spoken to him on the phone and says Reid got him to come back to Oakdale for a cardiac consult.
Just as Bob asks who the patient is, Reid walk in to hear it and has a look on his face like a kid who just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Reid goes over to introduce himself to John, only he forgets about the introducing himself part until John hears Bob call him "Dr. Oliver." Reid says he was meaning to say that; he's been working on being more polite. John responds that manners are overrated and take so much effort. You know, I think I like this guy, even if the only reason he's here is because of a completely craptastic storyline.
Reid wants to rush John to the hospital to see Chris (and also to avoid Bob's perfectly reasonable questions about things like "Who is this patient that needs a cardiac consult?" and "Why didn't you inform your Chief of Staff first?"). But it doesn't work out that way -- Kim insists that she's going to walk John up to his room so they can discuss their son Andy, and Reid should stay right where he is and answer Bob's questions.
Reid continues trying to avoid Bob's questions, and manages to do so for the 30 seconds or so it took John to get all the way up to his room, leave his bag there, and return to the lobby. Even with transporter technology, it should have taken him longer than that, but this is ATWT after all, so things like the passage of time don't need to actually make sense.
John and Reid walk a few steps away (where it's apparently impossible for Bob to overhear them), and John comments on the fact that Reid seems to think the hospital's Chief of Staff didn't need to know he was coming and asks who the mystery patient is. All Reid will tell John is that he'll find out soon enough.
Reid calls Chris to let him know he's brought in a specialist. When Chris starts asking a million questions about who the guy is, Reid doesn't directly answer him. Reid says all Chris needs to know is that he's the best, and then tells Chris, "Don't be the stubborn nitwit that I know you are, Doogie. You don't need me to tell you how urgent this is." Chris surprises everyone by actually agreeing. Even Reid is surprised, because he starts to fight with him then stops when it occurs to him that Chris isn't fighting. He realizes Chris must have finally told Katie about his health problems, and Chris confirms that he did tell her.
Over at the hospital, there's some nurse telling John that things haven't been the same without him. John asks if that's because there aren't enough tantrums. Reid comes up to them and tells the nurse that there's nobody manning the desk, then asks her if she's resting and if he's the only one working today. As John chuckles over this, the nurse, rather than being reduced to tears by Reid's comments, simply turns to John and says "no shortage of tantrums" before heading off, presumably to man the desk.
John wants to get to work and asks Reid for more information about the patient. For some reason I'm not sure I understand, Reid does his best to give John as little information as possible, but he does reveal that the patient has never been admitted to the hospital and that the patient was resistant so they don't have an MRI, but he hands John a list of medications that the patient had been taking. John asks who ordered the meds and Reid appears embarrassed to have to admit that he did. John is confused by why a neurosurgeon would be treating someone with myocarditis (yeah, John, I think everyone, including Reid, is kind of confused about that), but before Reid can try to dance his way around answering that one, Chris comes down the hall.
John seems delighted to see him (he must not know Chris very well), and starts in on a little small talk saying he didn't know Chris was back from his travels. Reid says he's pleased Chris is back from his travels as well, because now Chris can explain this mess to John, and walks away.
Reid goes home to a devastated Katie, who really doesn't want to talk. He asks if there's anything he can do. She says to just leave her alone, she just found out something and she can't talk about it.
Reid can't look her in the eye as he tells her he knows about Chris, and Katie's grief turns into rage. She's angry that Reid knows, that Chris trusted Reid before her, that Reid had known but hadn't warned her. It's really unfair that she's taking all her anger out on Reid like this, but at the same time, I can sort of understand why she hadn't allowed herself to get angry with Chris when he first told her -- after all, he's the one who's sick -- but is letting that anger bubble over and pour all over Reid, someone she knows can take it. Like I said, it's not fair, but I do think it's very human.
Reid tells her she can beat him up as much as she wants, just watch the hands, and she attacks him again for acting like this is funny. He says that he doesn't think it's funny at all, he's just not good at this sort of thing, especially when someone he cares about is involved. Katie is kind of slow today (which I guess is understandable, considering everything she has on her mind) and shoots back that Reid doesn't care about Chris. Reid tells her, "I'm talking about you, bonehead," and goes on to say that she and Jacob have grown on him.
Katie is still very upset, but seems to calm down a little and asks how Reid knew. He tells her it was his powers of observation and that he'd really wanted to tell her about it. Katie realizes that Chris's illness is what they've been fighting about all this time, not the Chief of Staff position.
Katie wants to know if it's as bad as Chris says -- could Chris die from this? Reid doesn't directly tell her that, yes, it's possible, but does tell her that it depends on how much muscle damage there is, then says that John Dixon is checking Chris out right now. The fact that John is on the job is great news to Katie and she decides to go over to the hospital.
Reid tells her that he and Luke were planning to spend some time together later, but if she needs someone to watch the kid --. Katie cuts him off and says that she'll call a sitter. Reid says "Thank God", but apparently Katie isn't calling the sitter so that Reid can go out with Luke; no, she wants Reid to come to the hospital with her. Poor Luke! He's not even in this episode, and he's still getting cockblocked!
Reid really doesn't want to dive back into that mess, and not just because it will interfere with his Luke-time, but Katie insists that he's her friend and she knows he'll be honest with her (pretty much implying that she knows she can't trust Chris to be honest), and begs him to come with her to help save Chris.
They go to the hospital together, and as she hugs John and tells him how glad she is that he's there, John wants to know what she's doing there. Reid answers for her, saying that Katie and Chris have "a thing."
A nurse comes in with the MRI results, and as John looks at them he's clearly not happy with them, but just tells everyone that they aren't what he'd hoped they would be.
He tells them that the inflammation has been there for quite some time and that Chris's heart is severely damaged. Reid asks John to explain to Katie what the options are for treatment. John just says that there are several and they'll start with the most conservative one, and Reid adds that they'll start on those treatments right away. John says that they'll start as soon as they tell their family what's going on. Chris says he thinks the best thing to do is to get everyone together and tell them all at once.
You've got to love how, 30 seconds ago, John was telling Chris he shouldn't take the oxygen mask off, but now it's apparently okay for him to not only take it off, but to get up and walk around the hospital, I guess looking for their family (and how lucky is it for them that there's an excellent chance they'll find most of their family somewhere around the hospital).
After they leave, Reid asks John to tell him what he really thinks. John says he's going to call
UNOS right away. When Reid asks if he really thinks it's going to be necessary to put Chris on the heart transplant list, John says that he hopes not, but that it might be a last resort and that he wants to get the ball rolling.
John then says that he's known Chris since he was a kid and that he shouldn't have to go through this (he leaves out the part about how it's quite possible Chris WOULDN'T have to go through this if he wasn't such a self-involved, brainless douchebag), then adds that it will kill his parents. Reid adds in "And Katie."
And that's it for today! And, hey! I managed to get through this entire clip without clawing my eyes out, so at least that's something!
