Character

Name: Mizuno Ami/Sailor Mercury
Fandom: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (PGSM) - liveaction TV series
Gender: Female
Age: ~19
Time Period: the Special Act movie, set four years after the main series
Wing Color: light blue

History:

Mizuno Ami was nothing but a lonely genius whose shyness prevented her from making friends with her peers until she met Tsukino Usagi. Ami became Sailor Mercury, one of the Sailor Senshi, soldiers sworn to fight evil and protect their princess (who later turned out to be Usagi herself). Through the senshi (Hino Rei - Mars, Kino Makoto - Jupiter, and eventually Aino Minako - Venus), Ami made more friends and made herself especially indispensible as she researched various problems such as the true identity of the mysterious Sailor V(enus).

Through branching out a little bit, Ami was finally able to be more accepted at school as well. Unfortunately, she never lost her loneliness or really gained full trust in her newfound friends though she remained close to Usagi at every turn, which resulted in something of a rivalry with Usagi's other close friend Osaka Naru. It also resulted in Ami's feelings being the anchor that kept Usagi from being overcome by a spell that almost turned her into one of the enemy's creatures, a youma.

The enemy, taking advantage of Ami's issues, turned her into an inversion of herself imbued with dark energy: Ami's compassion and kindness were suppressed, and her hidden resentments came out. She fought her former friends with a literal vengeance, and brainwashed the class at school to gain the friends she always wanted. But once she was hit with the light from the mystical silver crystal, the ginzuishou, the spells on her began to weaken and finally broke when Dark Mercury believed she had actually killed Usagi. Usagi was not dead, but stunned, and the two escaped the Dark Kingdom's subspace dimension.

Once Ami came back to the girls, she was quickly able to awaken her full senshi power from the past, making her stronger, and she was slowly able to gain a bit of faith in things working out for their battles. However, the girls quickly discovered a new problem: their princess had been the one to destroy the planet in the past in a fit of panicked grief when the prince Endymion died. Worse, with the reincarnation of the prince (Chiba Mamoru) forced to abandon Usagi, the same events were likely to repeat. Ami stood by Usagi firmly, helping her along with the others as they bolstered her confidence and general toughness.

However, increased enemy activity not only made Usagi's difficulties worse, they kept Ami out late at night, which may not have been a problem until a police officer was the one to bring her and Rei to their respective homes- and call their parents. Ami, unable to explain the senshi battles, could offer no answer and explanation to her mother, who decided she should switch schools away from the presumable bad influence of her new friends. Ami protested, and eventually ran away, but finally gained the courage to tell her mother that she wanted to fulfill their original dream of Ami becoming a doctor, but that right now staying with her friends was more important. She was allowed to.

The resolution of their battles was not nearly as smooth. The princess grew more and more aggressive and out of control while the Great Evil powering their enemy, the demon Metalia, also grew stronger in response, the two powers feeding each other. Eventually, Metalia posessed Mamoru who took it in himself hoping to suppress it. Usagi was forced to kill her own beloved herself. The princess broke through once again and announced that the end of the planet would come by her hand once more, and deliberately this time. The senshi each fought her, spurred on by Ami who realized that it would be Usagi's wish to save the planet even at that cost, but they were defeated. Ami died reaching out to her, but the princess destroyed the planet once more.

With no memory of this, Ami was simply returned to school one day. Usagi, coming back in control after the destruction, had restored the planet to its former state, but at the cost of her own life. Only when Ami heard one of Minako's songs by chance did she suddenly remember Usagi and the battles and bond she shared with all the senshi. The other girls had similar experiences, and ran to meet Usagi, who was able to return to life thanks to their memories and feelings for her.

Four years later, the girls are no longer senshi and do not have their transformation items. Ami is a doctor giving other doctors advice on their surgeries, having studied in America during her high school years to become (or so it is rumored) the youngest doctor ever. She is planning to go back home for Usagi's wedding which is coming up in two weeks, but her plans are changed when it turns out one enemy has survived and is trying to revive the Dark Kingdom. Hearing the news, Ami literally runs from the hospital and is back in Japan as soon as possible. Once there, a group of the new enemy's creatures, pierrot, threaten her but she knocks them out of the way with her car until she almost hits the side of a building.

Ami helps the other senshi recover the legendary sword given to them by Queen Serenity of the past-life Moon Kingdom. With it, they are able to regain their powers for that day and that battle to be able to defeat the evil once and for all.

Personality:

Ami is lonely. She herself says the senshi are the first time she's had friends in her life, and she wasn't able to trust even them; she is suspicious of people who approach her since it's usually not for herself but for what she can give them, such as homework help or fighting together as a soldier. This makes her suspicious and often, in turn, somewhat cold to people to brush them off and avoid this.

She has a low opinion of herself, considering studying her only redeeming value and often calling herself despicable when her resentments get the better of her and asking others if they think she may simply be 'bad inside'. She collapses easily under the weight of guilt, refusing to even extricate herself from danger because she feels she doesn't deserve to go back once she returns to normal after being her darker self. Optimism is canceled out by practicality, and she has trouble making herself try to believe things will simply work out or working by faith.

Formal and reserved by nature, Ami enjoys quiet pursuits such as reading and knitting. She is proper in her habits and even her posture. She is devoted to her mother and plans to become a doctor someday to make her happy. This loyalty is very important to her; the one time she will yell even at Rei is when Rei suggests all parents are selfish, thus implying Ami's mother is also selfish. She will go to extremes to avoid conflict and rationalize away her hurt feelings - she's used to lonely situations, the other person didn't mean it, the way things turned out was fair even if not what she wanted - but this leads to resentments bottling and piling up; she even admits hating Usagi's school friends at one point because they take Usagi away from her.

As her first and best friend, Usagi is key to Ami beyond even this. Ami is passionately loyal to her, and Ami's feelings are even able to save Usagi at one point. She supports everything Usagi does, because Usagi has done so much for her, and when Ami finally gains a bit of faith, it is still by proxy: She chooses to believe the situation will be resolved because Usagi believes so. It's because Ami can't properly express some of this that the resentments of other claims on Usagi's time (and perhaps simply because she feels she only has Usagi while Usagi has many other people and Usagi's school friends also have many other people) that the issues crop up eventually. She tends to be very avoidant of conflict, as she automatically becomes afraid the other person may hate her for their disagreements or what Ami wants to do.

Although Usagi is able to look past all this and see the normal, cute girl who likes pop idols and karaoke and sleepovers, Ami is very unfamiliar with these typical teen girl things. Still, she is so desperate for acceptance that she is willing to push herself to the brink of her health (physical and mental), exhausting herself to the point of hallucinations by trying to be what she thinks Usagi wants in a friend. While she is very strong in mind, she is not so strong emotionally. The best advice Ami ever receives is possibly Osaka Naru telling her to just be honest with her feelings and stand up for the things she wants.

As Mercury, Ami changes a bit, though only slightly. She is willing to do things Ami might consider wrong - lying to cover up senshi secrets, disguising herself to investigate somewhere, or the time she shoved someone to try to get back a valuable object they were stealing that might have been related to the senshi - if it is for the sake of the senshi mission and their goals. She has also been known to taunt her opponents in battle, making her certainly more bold than Ami tends to be at other times.

Ami has also changed slightly now that she's older. Being able to branch out and move out on her own has given her some more independence and confidence in herself, and she seems more comfortable around others, such as the doctors she works with at the hospital.

Strengths:

* Intelligence: Ami is told by her cram school teacher during junior high that she could probably handle college-level work. She is consistently ranked first in the school for her grades, and does in fact start her medical school studies abroad during what should have been her high school years instead, letting her become (it is rumored) the youngest doctor ever.

* Senshi Power: Throughout the series, several things are explained as manifestations of the 'senshi power'. The girls are endowed with the knowledge of combat they had in the past innately once they become senshi, as seen when they may be clumsy at fighting until that moment but quite capable afterward. They are resistant (not to say wholly immune) to brainwashing; no basic brainwashing has worked on them but much stronger brainwashing has. The same holds true for the enemy creatures, youma, putting people to sleep; senshi are often not affected. Typically, senshi are expected to be able to sense the presence of danger or the enemy; Venus is utterly shocked when Usagi fails to notice an enemy presence at one point.

* Senshi Powers: As opposed to 'senshi power', basic strengths of the senshi, Ami has specific attacks and abilities as Sailor Mercury. They are 'Mercury Aqua Mist', 'Shine Aqua Illusion', a stream of water simply conjured from her hands instead of as a formal attack, 'Mercury Aqua Storm', 'Mercury Aqua Cyclone', and 'Mercury Aqua Blizzard'. She is also able to conjure her sword, her ultimate weapon, from her sailor star tambo. (video here)

* Teletia-S: This device is a magical communicator that looks like a cell phone. It is capable of disguising the girls as whatever they take pictures of, and Ami even uses hers to literally take Rei's shape at one point, to the point a man who had met with Rei purposely to ask for her help did not recognize the difference.

* Sailor Star Tambo: This device, which looks like a tambourine, is given to each of the girls about midway through the season. They report they feel stronger once they have it, and the item itself is able to produce blasts of energy at the opponent. They also call on the tambos to produce their ultimate weapons.

Weaknesses:

* In Combat: Ami is not strong. She is easily pushed around by her enemies (although this reverses to an extent as Dark Mercury). She has mobility and agility, but not physical size or power.

* Powers: Ami's powers are notably not as high-powered as the others; she is better at support such as with her bubbles and fog. (This is again reversed somewhat as Dark Mercury when power becomes one of her major motivations and she is able to knock down the girls fairly easily in one hit from her dark energy.)

* Emotional: Ami is incredibly weak emotionally. She not only has many sad or lonely or bitter emotions, she gives them control. She has been known to make herself pass out or even hallucinate simply because of her stress and worries, and she was manipulated into becoming her darker self partly by the same worries.

* Former Death Penalty: Ami's death penalty would of course be in effect on her arrival until if and when it's removed. This means she will be unable to speak for at least a few months.

Samples

First Person:

This is Sailor Mercury. I'm not sure if this will reach anyone, but I would appreciate some idea of where I may be. I'm approaching a small village near a lake. [She describes the specific scene a bit more.] It feels familiar.

I also need to return home as quickly as possible. I have things to do there. My friends are waiting for me and need my help. It's an emergency.

[She turns off the feed, and is left to wonder why it all feels familiar. Each moment even feels like it's getting clearer. She needs to decide whether to stay where she is or move on while she waits for answers. After a moment, she walks on in the direction of the village.]

Third Person:

"Mercury Aqua-!" She stopped short, her head snapping up even as she lowered her arms. She was alone. The others were no longer right beside her, the enemy was no longer right in front of her. What had Mio done?

Mercury took a quick glance to the right, then left. She still recognized nothing. The senshi pulled out her teletia-S, but after a moment she put it back without calling anyone. They were in the middle of a battle. There was nothing they could do. She had to find the way back to them, to Usagi especially.

It wasn’t fair that after everything Usagi had already gone through, this was happening now, too.

Staying put wasn’t going to do Mercury any good. There weren’t exactly many landmarks, but this didn’t seem like a very frequented spot. If she wanted help, she’d have to at least find civilization, if she could. She scanned the horizon, and thought she made out the limits of a village.

That would have to do. She could find someone there to explain things, maybe. Maybe, she could even find a way back already. Not maybe. She had to. She was supposed to be there with them, her comrades and friends. Rei-chan was already missing, injured and in the hospital after the first battles with this enemy. One more senshi missing would give a huge advantage to their opponent. She had to get back.

As she started to move, she noticed the book.

“A book? Out here?” She looked around again, but the landscape was equally barren. She picked the journal up. Words sprang to life on the page and in her surprise, she almost dropped it. Reading a few was enough to get the right idea, and it felt… familiar. Like she’d used something like it before.

Shaking that impossible (wasn’t it?) feeling off, Mercury found the voice function remarkably easily (It was just a crazy feeling, wasn’t it?) and made her first new post.
