Jun 27, 2011 07:58

[Ami sticks to voice, because it's a fairly simple announcement and request.]Excuse me. I was speaking with Link about the swimming lessons he asked about. He thought there might be other people interested, too, so, I wanted to ask if there were ( Read more... )

[It's... been some time since Robert and Ami spoke, and he's had a lot to think about, and grieve over, since then. But he's feeling a little better now, and this does sound like something constructive to do.]

Ah... I... I would appreciate more lessons on the subject, actually.

It's meant to be at the ocean. Is that alright?

Ah... I have never swam in the ocean, but... I would not be against doing so. There are issues with strong currents and the like though, correct?

[He's new at this kind of thing.]

It depends upon the location. It takes more effort than swimming in a pool, where the water is usually calm, but the principles are largely the same.

[A nervous smile flickers across the scientist's face at this.]

I am c-certain that with your expertise, I will be fine. Don will likely assist me further, as well.

[It'll be less uncomfortable than the time they swam in the lake together...]

I'll do the best that I can. And we'll have plenty of ways to make sure no one can be hurt while they learn and practice.

Have you taught... essentially complete novices [- and his voice might betray some embarrassment here -] how to swim before? Or am I one of the first...?

The truth is, I've never taught anyone before. We'll have to figure things out together.

[Normally, she wouldn't advise an untrained instructor to take on students; but her own swimming skill is unsurpassed, and she definitely knows how to keep it safe - and has first aid training if something did go wrong.]

[Robert trusts Ami significantly - and he thinks she at least has some understanding if she's offering to train others.]

I would be glad for the opportunity.

... I need to... become stronger. [Something creeps into Robert's tone here - sadness, hesitance - but he doesn't trail off. It's a decided sentence, if anything.]

It's a good goal for anyone.

Of course - everybody could benefit from the honing of a skill.

I just... [Conviction bolsters his words.] I am... tired of being utterly helpless. Though much of Luceti is... b-beyond my ability to influence, this is something I can change.

[She seems to consider this, because there is a brief silence before she replies. Perhaps something simply distracted her.]

Could I tell you something, Robert?

[Robert nods gently.]

Please... f-feel free.

A very long time ago, our powers weren't originally meant for destruction and fighting either.

[What he makes of this, she leaves for him to decide.]

[This is surprising to hear. And Robert is going to say something even more surprising.]

...

... I... still must... r-review this, but I am beginning to think there is... merit to the idea that fighting can be... ... ethically-compatible. In... in certain situations.

[Was that hard for him to say, as a Terran? Yes.

... Does it seem more and more true the longer he stays in Luceti? Yes.]

... Wh-what was the... initial use of your powers for, if you know?

Many different things. We can still do those things, of course. But I think we've become used to using them to fight.
