A/N: Wifey gave me this prompt for the three line fic meme forever ago - Nathan/Emily, notebook - and I only just now came up with an idea for it. Gloriously unbeta'd XD Enjoy, bbs ♥

Nathan squinted at the piece of paper in front of him, eyes roving over the lines and letters. He pursed his lips a little and then pushed his glasses up his nose before his fingers moved to tug on his earlobe.

"Nathan -"

"Shh," he said, waving his other hand at her and glancing at her face, mirroring her small smile.

He was thoughtful a moment longer and then took a breath. "D."

Emily groaned and shook her head, turning the notebook back to her and adding the other leg to the little stick figure.

"Lost again. Nate, you're kind of bad at this."

"You keep giving me these long, crazy phrases!" he exclaimed, gesturing at the notepad in her hands.

She smirked and flipped to the next blank page, but didn't respond.

"You know, this is kind of morbid," Nathan murmured, raising an eyebrow at her as she set up another puzzle. "Hangman?"

Her smile widened but she still didn't speak as she set up the next puzzle.

Nathan glanced away from her, his smile fading a little as he stared around the hospital room. He barely noticed the faint beeping that came from the monitors she was hooked up to, so used to hearing them now that it was just white noise.

"Okay," she said, drawing his attention once again.

She showed him the new puzzle and he stared at the blanks, just three words, one letter, then four, then three.

He contemplated it a moment, smiling slightly, and then gave his first guess. "A."

Emily gave him a look as she drew a small circle. "Nathan, if you don't get this, I may have to make you leave."

He smirked. "I."

She grinned and wrote the letter in the first blank.

"Hmm," he mused. "O?"

Her grin widened as she wrote the letter in two more blanks, the second letter in the last two words.

U was his next guess and she bit her lip as she wrote it in the very last blank.

"Shooting for all vowels, here, Em?"

She just grinned again as she raised her hand to push a section of red hair behind her ear.

"Okay, give me a... an E."

"Almost there," Emily murmured as she wrote it in the last blank of the second word. "You're out of vowels."

Nathan smiled and stood, resting his arms on the bed railing as he stared down at his wife.

"L, V, Y," he said softly, staring intently into her warm brown eyes before she lowered her gaze to the notebook once again.

She wrote these last letters in and then turned the notebook towards him, smiling brightly as he read the phrase.

I love you.

"I love you too," he whispered, resting his hand on her cheek as he leaned down to gently touch his lips to hers.
