33 Apocalypse Ave - Saturday Morning

May 12, 2007 22:55

Thursday was in the dining room with a cup of coffee, a croissant and a copy of one of the local Virginia newspapers. Friday was in the next chair, determined to learn how to sit at the big table and eat cereal on his own without spilling it too much. He was only partially succeeding, but there was a change of clothes upstairs with his name on it ( Read more... )

After a night spent checking out the island in a handwavey manner and deciding that this wasn't a trap by any of his enemies, that there wasn't any clear and present dangers around, and that the view from the Rocky Bits at night was really quite pretty - not that he would EVER say that to anyone - Drax looked for someplace to live.

There was a sign on the garage door of this house advertising a room for rent. Drax decided to give it a shot.

He knocked on the door and tried to seem friendly. He even took his knives out of their holsters and put them away in his bags. He couldn't quite manage a friendly smile, but he tried.

A few moments later, Thursday answered the door. She had to look up to see who she was answering to. He certainly wasn't what she had expected, but after dealing with fictional characters of all shapes and sizes and Darth Vader and The Tick as housemates, she wasn't particularly fazed. "Yes?" she asked politely.

"Hello," Drax said, having a little trouble trying to maintain the smile. "You have a room for rent. I need a place to sleep. What do I have to do to get that room?"

"I'd imagine most people who come to Fandom don't have references available, so a short interview will do. I'm Thursday Next."

"Good call. I don't have any. I'm called Drax," he said, leaving off "the Destroyer." He felt that might be a negative in an interview for renting a room.

Thursday opened the door further. "Come in. Will you be working in town or at the school?" she asked, then added. "Once it's rebuilt."

"If things go well, I'll be the new Dean of Students at the school," Drax said stepping inside. "If not, I could find something in town. Just hopefully not at that ice cream shop."

Drax would refuse to sing for a tip. Somebody would end up with a plastic spoon in their cranium and then he would need to flee. The ice cream shop would be a bad place for him to work.

"Oh, you're replacing The Tick," Thursday noted, stating the obvious for narrative purposes. She led him further into the house after closing the door. Friday watched from the dining room, trying to balance his spoon on his nose. "He used to live here." She moved a few paces towards the garage, opened the door and flicked the light on. "This is the room. It was a garage in the original plans, but there aren't any cars in Fandom so it was renovated to be a spare room. Plenty of space. The owner of the house, Logan, is gone for the summer. The house is in my care while he's away. There's a new housemate in the basement. My son and I live on the second floor and Doogie and Anakin have rooms up there as well. Pickwick is the only animal in the house. She's a dodo, harmless and will leave you alone most of the time." Thursday finished the spiel. "The room is yours if you'd like it."

The Tick. Doogie. Anakin. Logan. Thursday. Pickwick. With names like those, Drax actually felt kind of comfortable with the idea of living here. "I'll take it," he said.
