Happy Accident (G)scifishipperNovember 2 2012, 12:58:08 UTC
Kara opened her eyes to a white plastic face with a slash of red marker on its cheek. "Look, mommy! Daddy found me a doll!"
Kara opened her eyes wide and grinned as the doll was replaced by a happy five-year old Sasha, blue eyes dancing with delight.
Rolling sideways, Kara pulled the little girl into her cot and buried her nose into her dark hair. "Daddy's a good hunter, baby," she mumbled, sleep still pulling at her consciousness.
"He said I could keep her." Sasha wriggled, sliding her cold feet against Kara's shins. With a shiver, Kara tucked them between her legs and pulled the blanket higher.
“Where is he, anyway?” Kara listened for the sounds of him outside their cabin, usually banging pots this time of morning.
“He went to see uncle Saul and papa,” she chirped, squirming under the blanket. “They’re having a finder’s keepers party tonight, he said.”
Kara chuckled. “No, a Founder’s Day party, baby. It’s the same party that we had last year, remember, the one where daddy and uncle Helo were singing all those terrible songs? The one where we celebrate finding Earth. It’s been two years.”
Sasha giggled and started to sing, her voice a tiny squawk of out-of-tune words, mimicking what had become a year-long joke in the family.
Kara hummed along, accompanying her daughter before they both dissolved into carefree laughter.
