DPP: Carpe Diem

Oct 15, 2012 20:50

Hey you all! I'll take over for this week. I'll apologize in advance for the strange hours of the posts. Today's is a little late, tomorrow's might be a little early, etc.

For today I have a question: How much do the people in BSG universe are able to live in the moment? The question refers to everybody but especially to our pilots. So, are they ( Read more... )

Well, I think when it comes to each other, pilots aren't really able to "Get what they can, right now..." they both seem to live in the past quite a bit, hung up on dead guys (Kara) or even just old ideals of the person they thought they were supposed to be (Lee). It's probably realistic though. As fun as "we're about to die, let's frak" fics can be...it makes more sense that you can't quite abandon your baggage and who you are, even when faced with the world changing around you.

I think they try to do this but like Tara says, the past weighs much too heavily on them most of the time. The only time when I think that they, together, did just take what they could was the affair (and that was Kara's angle on it while Lee worried about his wife and their marriages and wanted them to split from their spouses so they could consider the future together), and even then external considerations do hit them quite a bit.

bI'd also say Groundbreaking Day on New Caprica was a nit of a carpe diem for Lee, but even then he didn't put his feelings on the line only for that moment, he and Kara were both thinking of the future there (making plans to split from Sam and Dee and be together etc)

To be honest I've never really understood how little day seizing there is in the BSG universe. The worlds have ended this is the perfect time to start over, not live in the past. this is the time to figure out how to be the person you really are not the one you think you should be.

I do think it's incredibly interesting though that it's on New Caprica, when things are getting back to 'normal' that Lee and Kara stop and really take a chance. That seems almost as counterintuative to me.

This is actually the reason that I asked the question. Is sort of strange that even with the situation that they are in there are not so many instances where people in BSG universe are just living the moment. Sometimes I have the strange feeling that we are doing it today in RL more than them.

On the other side - New Caprica was always more like "jumping on to the last train" than "Carpe Diem"

There's probably very little of it in general in BSG but I think it's certainly missing in Kara and Lee's interactions with each other. I think for Kara and the Adamas it can never just be the end of the world. They not only have current responsibility but the very fact of them alive and together at the end of the world kind of keeps them stuck in the past. What if Lee had just been some random pilot who was assigned to Galactica for the decommissioning? I wonder what the pilots relationship would have been then.

interesting question. There are a couple of fics - not the best, but not bad - who tried that approach but IDK, I always get that feeling that something is missing. Maybe that something is one of our great writers from this comm to take on the subject.
