We'll start with a few general questions. Did you like the raw atmosphere of UBEX or did you prefer the more poetic aired version with lots of images and little time for dialogue?
Originial version for me, bb!!!workerbee73September 29 2011, 16:33:45 UTC
I may be in the minority here, but I am ALL ORIGINAL VERSION, ALL THE TIME. Everything in UBEX feels bloated to me. And clumsy. The dialogue. The emotion. Way too much of both. And the characterization feels way off. Kara is a raging bitch and there are moments when she's taunting Lee that I actually just cringe (and not even in a "Oh honey no" way but more of a "Could the writing have been any more hamfisted?" way.)
And Lee with the all "I just realized I have a crush on you, omg!" Aww no, bb. Don't buy that for a minute. And there's just too much talking. Pilots don't talk. They do. If they actually talked about shit, they'd have worked out all their issues in about 5 minutes. But baby don't work that way. And I love them all the more for it. ((In fact, this really goes to one of the reasons I love them so much as a fictional couple-- they screw it up, they dance around each other, they're not perfect. They miss opposruntities, they don't get ever afters, they share moments. They can't have a lifetime but they are

I'm actually with you on this one. Although, I wish that some of the UBEX scenes were in the aired version, overall I prefer the atmosphere and the editing of UB. It's really beautiful and I love the timing and placing of the flashbacks in the "present day time". It says much more than the dialogues ever could.

You know, in a way, UBEX reads a lot like fanfic. It kind of fills in all those little relationship details that we shippers crave, but I'm ultimately not satisfied with how it does it. I'd much prefer the space to be negative and to fill in all those gaps myself.

Obviously I saw UB first but when I watched UBEX, I was all for having all the extra footage. Later when I gave UB another chance, I realized that I actually prefer the aired execution more. The major thing that I like in UBEX is that it is very obvious that Kara didn't lie and that she indeed loves Lee. She looks really insecure in the field but the way they cut it for the aired version makes her look confused and not that much into it.

See I like that the sexin' is ambiguous. I personally think that scene has true love written all over it-- it just isn't spelled out. I like that we don't know what's going on in Kara's head... until the final scene with her and Lee and Sam. Then it's all spelled out as clear as day on her face (at least to me). All that regret and trying to be stoic and taking the path of self-preservation (for both of them) and it's KILLING HER THE ENTIRE TIME. Gah. Totally works for me.

What spells LOVE to me is Kara marrying Sam. If she didn't love Lee, she would just tell him that it was a drunken mistake and moved on. Instead she married a man she barely knew, didn't know if she loved him and never thought of marrying him until that morning.

True statement!
ultimately not satisfied with how it does it.
Agreed, it had it's issues but I was still glad they tried. Because I am totally of the lazy shipper sort who will take whatever I can get even when it's not done to perfection because I like clear answers and gray areas hurt my brain. (I am this way in life too now that I think of it.)
Either way, I found it very interesting to compare the two. They're so alike and still so very different. Oops! There goes my brain hurting again. :)

They really are like two different stories. And I don't mean to be all hatin' on the UBEX-- b/c it does try and fill in those little moments that the show often passes by (as in affair? Hello wha?... Oh yummy kissage!....AND now it's over. Thank you, EOJ.)
I think for me, I get all huffy when Show messes with the Canon in My Head. (See almost!table!sex as Exhibit A.)

Well said. Innibis is of the same mind and she is always telling me that it's not that big of a deal. But for some reason it rubbs me the wrong way (essentially one of those moments where I throw things at the screen and yell "WERE WE WATCHING THE SAME SHOW???")
And yes, I think you can rationalize it, but Lee has always seemed too cerebral and piney-oriented to make that convo credible for me. But maybe it's just awkward wording. Whatever it is, it leaves me cold.
((But then again, you are talking to a certified UBEX hatah. Hatah! **giggles**))

No, you are definitely not alone on this, I too prefer the aired UB even though I wish it featured some of the UBEX scenes. I really don't care about the superfluous Sam and Dee crap or just how extra-horrible Kara is to Lee in UBEX, and could seriously do without it.
I mean, I'm not a UBEX hater but UB original is like a love song to pilots in all their beauty, messiness and pain - it does a much better job of keeping the focus on pilots, which is where it belongs.
