if i should currently name one novel that is absolutely to my liking, it would have to be Joe Abercrombie's 'The First Law'. well, it's actually three novels, but that's a mere technicality. i've recently finished the last pages of the last chapter of the last novel and i have to say i probably wouldn't change a single thing in the whole 1500+ pages of it.
one of the kind characters, great plotting, flawless prose (or so i found.. utterly enjoyable), insight, wit, mood, action.. everything. it's hard to believe the author is just a few years older than i am. O_o
should i mention one relative shortcoming.. about 3/4 of the first book is actually setting up the stage for later. that took me almost a year to get through. not because it was bad or boring.. it just wasn't enough for my attention span. but i knew i had to keep on, i knew i had a good book in my hands.. and i'm glad i did so.
i was so lucky to have the second novel with me by the sea this summer.. it would have been a hard time to survive without an absorbing read. (my sincere thanks to the author once again..) the only problem was i finished it a day too soon. >_>
as i'm sure i've said before, i don't usually find many words for the things i like.. or don't feel like finding, anyway. so let's just say this much.. reading 'The First Law' attentively is bound to quake the very foundations of your notions of right and wrong, good and bad, or any illusion of those you might have held before.
now that i mention it, i still haven't posted a single picture from the late-summer retreat. my laziness knows no bounds..
so.. since winter is nigh (at last), here goes a preview..
there was sea..
..and then some sea..
..and sea..
but just turn around and
see..
on a sidenote (it ocurred to me yesterday).. i can't for the love of god understand how anyone can keep watching 'Prison Break'. it's the which season is it already? and whenever i see a preview they're still in a fucking prison! and you don't see anything but braindead tattooed thugs! don't even get me started about the escape plan being tattooed on a lead character's body.. >_> duhn.
i tried to at least read the episode synopses so that i get an idea about the goings on, but couldn't finish even the first season's worth..
