Thoughts on No Poo

After being inspired by this and other no poo sites I've been at it for about 6 months. My hair is still not perfect but I've learned some really valuable things about it and I'd never go back to traditional hair care. I have (or thought I had) very straight very fine very oily hair. I used to wash everyday or suffer crazy greasiness. This was part of my motivation for going no poo. Thoughts:

1. No poo is really about getting to know my hair and realizing that I don't have the hair I thought I had. I don't think hair is supposed to be super straight and shiny. Healthy and glowing and textured yes, but polished and straight, no. I've noticed a lot of people with my hair type say that no poo just doesn't work for them. I think it's just that they haven't mentally adjusted to what their hair is really like.
2. My hair smells, but it doesn't smell bad, just like more of me. It smells healthy and conditioned. I've really grown to like the smell and don't think that it's dirty at all.
3. The texture has changed dramatically. It's thick and wavy and can hold a style now. I can't wait until it's long and thick again.
4. I cut my hair really short right before I decided to go no poo. Now, I can see the six months of new growth. I really think my old ends can't take the no poo as well as the new 'virgin' hair at the roots. They had been dyed and are pretty dry, but the new hair soaks up the oils much better.
5. My routine (after much much trial and error): I currently use saltwater washes every 3 days or so and follow with a ACV rinse. On off days if I need it I use cornstarch mixed with some cinnamon for color (and cuz it smells nice) and I apply it with a powder brush to the roots and then brush it through. I use a BS wash every once in a while for extra cleansing. I started our with a lot of BC and ACV and have gradually come to understand how little my hair really needs. It's really easy to use too much as we are so programmed to think our hair needs lots of stuff.

All in all, it's been challenging but fun. I would say my hair is really still adjusting (or i'm adjusting to my hair) but I definitely wouldn't go back. Go no pooers!

hair was straight-but now is curly, salt-water wash
