People said I should update with how the beginnings of no-poo went for me, so I shall!
To recap: I have very thin, fine hair that tends to get greasy at the roots and crunchy / dry / split-endy. I also have dandruff issues, which I'm trying to help along with no-poo.
So I have to look presentable at work, so I've been washing my hair every other day with dandruff shampoo for the past week or so. I can already see a bit of a difference in that my hair is less greasy on day 2 than it normally is. Yesterday I went swimming, which was day 3 without washing my hair, and it seemed to redistribute the oils in such way that it made my hair very waxy. Not nice.
That night, I scrubbed in a lot of baking soda to my head. The rinse I used was pretty cool--I brewed some Red Zinger herbal tea, added rosemary and thyme, and then, after it steeped for a good long time, I strained it and added a shot of rum (to help dissolve the waxiness) and some white vinegar--I ended up with about 12 oz of rinse total, with about 1/4 cup of vinegar.
While the baking soda made my hair just feel weird, the rinse actually made my hair detangle and feel great! My scalp isn't itchy at all, which is lovely. This morning (day 4) my hair still felt waxy and gross in places, so I used a little bit of Tom's of Maine soap (which has all-natural soaps and no -cones or sls) to help clarify a litle bit. While my ends are still spit endy and crunchy, the rest of my hair has more volume than it ever has, and besides a bit of residual waxiness, it feels pretty good!
Also: how do you apply baking soda? I just kind of scooped it out and scrubbed it on my wet hair, but I feel like there must be a better way. Would making a slurry of it work better?
