Report: Washing with Flax Seed

Jun 23, 2007 11:08

Ok, I was drafted as a guinea pig on this one, so here's my report.
My main reason for trying the flax was because of leftover oil from an almond oil hair treatment several days earlier and the oil was not coming out.

I made a little bowl of 1/4 cup Flax Seed Meal with some water and let it sit overnight on my counter to get mucilaginous (goopy). In the morning, I prepped my regular No_poo regimen and hopped into the shower. I soaked my hair under the shower head for a minute, and decided to wash the length first. I scooped the flax goop up and slathered it on the hair length. I had only oiled below my ears, so that's where I applied it. It was easy to work work. I just kept mushing the mixture into the length for a few minutes.

and then I rinsed... and rinsed... and rinsed... and rinsed.

Then I took the handheld shower head and washed off all of the flax goop off of the walls and shower floor. That stuff flings everywhere even when being very careful. It looks awful, too, so making a mess IS a big deal.

and then I rinsed... and rinsed... and rinsed... and rinsed.

I then followed up with my regular BS solution on the scalp and ACV rinse for the length.

I had to comb my hair when I got out of the shower and a LOT of ground seed was still in it. it was pretty awful. I combed and rinsed and combed and rinsed. Even the, as it dried, it dropped little flecks all over the floor.  No matter how much it was rinsed, a LOT still stayed in the hair.

The result was that MUCH of the oil came out of the hair. Not all. There are still several strands that are more oily than necessary.
My hair does NOT feel as good as it does without the oil or the flax. So, for me, sticking with the simple BS/ACV makes more sense.
Basically, no result other than dealing with the mess and trying something new.

Will I do it again? Nope, flax is for eatin'.  If I find  a source for JUST the flax mucilage without anything else, then I might give it a shot again if I end up with an oil problem, but here is not enough produced from any reasonable amount of flax to work with. I've played the game of straining it before and it wasted a LOT of flax.

~(confirmed two-time posters), flaxseed wash
