I was reading rawfamily.com and stumbled across a couple of other no poo methods. I haven't tried either of these yet, but I plan to and I thought I'd share the info here in case others are interested in them

wow thanks for sharing the website's quite interesting! certainly an eye-opener,because I just had to google what Flaxseed looks like haha. My hair's tired of CO and 'proper' no poo is just too messy for me, so now i either go water only with really hot water to kind of 'dissolve' the grease or use an egg yolk as shampoo ( although they're free range I still feel quite guilty, my vegan friends will not like this!)
Flaxseed is important stuff for vegan folk because it has those oils in it that people usually get from fish.
Even though I haven't tried this method yet (just found it today and already washed my hair just this morning, so . . .) I can tell you that the flaxseeds will be sort of . . emulsify-ish after you put them in the blender the next day. Flax is often used as an egg replacer because of that emulsion-y-ness. You should be able to find flax seed at a health food store or a chain store with a good health section.
Flaxseed's also used to make hair gel - apparently, quite effectively; and Henna for Hair's gel mixes use it when hennaing the hair to make hennaing rather easier (not to mention allowing you to store the flaxseed-henna mix for some time).
oh! i think i'll try this flaxseed method tomorrow. sounds interesting. i think i'll double the mixture though. ;-)
i've been using various aurvedic herbs, and it's seeming to not be as effective as it was. maybe i need to get some buildup off or something. it's good to vary your routine.
and maybe i'll see how different pre-ground flax is to the soaked then blended goo is. it seems like pre-ground flax would be immensely less messy and less wasteful. :-) but maybe there's something else that gets released when soaked flax is blended.
i stick my whole seeds and the ground (that i make in relatively smallish batches in a dedicated coffee grinder) in the freezer. :-) works even better. i get a little freaked by the idea of moisture created in the fridge. at least in the freezer, the moisture is frozen. :-) less chance of going mildewy. and the flax probably lasts longer that way.
I wash mine with about a tablespoon of bs, a table spoon of sugar and a pinch or clove powder. It works quite well as a paste. Work it in then rinse well.
I was excited to find this other option because bs turns out to be too harsh for my hair/skin (I have tried diluting and diluting it and couldn't find a middle-ground solution between too harsh for me and just water.)
I'm not knocking the no poo used by most people here because most people report amazing results but every time I try it myself it's great for a few weeks and then my head starts bleeding and the "detox" lasts for a couple months (possibly longer, that's the longest I've been able to stand having open sores on my scalp.)
I figured it might be good to share other ideas as well, in case anyone else was here because they want something more natural than shampoo but, like me, have not had a good time with the baking soda no poo.
I have read that there are alternatives to the bs. I too was having issues with the BS and detox. Got really frustrated. Was reading that sugar and honey are good for hydration of the skin and such so I figured why not use less BS a little more sugar and see how it goes. My hair feels great and so far no problems. It is just very important to rince really well to avoid having some of it stay in. I'm not sure if that was part of my issue before but eh. Also, when I started no poo I was living where there was a water softener. The house I have now has no water softner and a well so that could be part of it too.

After reading this post, I went and tried it out for a few days...
*UGH!* is all I can say.
I would not recommend this for anyone with thin, light-coloured hair. Athough it didnt exactly make my hair feel greasy afterwards, it did make it feel really weird ~ somewhat like slightly-wet hair gel (which is why I guess it's said to be great for hair gel).

Wow, thanks for the input! I'm almost due for a hair washing again (I wash once a week) . . . now I'm hesitating whether to try it or not. I think I will anyway since I said I would, but I've got thin hair, too, so I'll know to expect to need a scarf afterwards if I get the same results.

i bet the oils would be great for the length.

if you get pre-ground flax, keep it in the refrigerator because the oils in flaxseed go rancid easily.
