[It's rather obvious that someone's settled in and relaxed a little since his arrival. Finding out that your dying actions saved the human race will do that to you, after all. Jack's reclining very near to edge of the lake- near enough that he's got a fishing pole that he's scrounged up from somewhere, the line of which is connected to a bobber ( Read more... )

[Killua has been all over the place this week. It's a crime to stay inside during an event like this, after all. When he sees this stranger fishing, however, he has to pause, a few unwanted though inviting memories pushing their way to the surface of his thoughts.

Thus, have a kid standing next to you, Jack. He can't be any older than his early teens, and his hands are casually resting in the pockets of his shorts as he tries to appear nonchalant.]

Catch anything?

It's not so much about the actual- fishing part of it. [Which is a fancy way of saying- not yet. After all, he's spent a good deal of the past ten years fishing in an empty pond; he's a little rusty.] It's more about the- act of fishing. Once my buddy Teal'c gets out here, we'll have a little bonding time. Although- you're welcome to join us.

[He grins a little, settling down a little more into his seat.]

I've got another rod in our cabin.

I never really got it. The whole ... "act" of fishing thing.

[Gon had really liked it, said it was relaxing. He'd held onto that fishing rod like losing it would kill him.

Despite his words, however, he's not leaving, his eyes locked on the bobber.]

Not everyone does. [A statement that widens the grin on his face, even as he shakes his head.] One of my friends used to insist that it was more fun to do science projects underground than be out in the open air, fishing. Never did quite understand that.

[Despite his lack of understanding, there's a fondness to his voice, and he shrugs.] For me, well. It's peaceful, out here. Fishing, you can just take the time to enjoy yourself, and enjoy the company of your fellow fishermen.

So you're not fishing. You're just hanging out.

[That tone is just a teensy bit accusatory. Because if you're just hanging out, he totally gets that.]

Nope! Definitely fishing. [As if to back up his point, the bobber in the water tugs downward. Jack flashes a grin to the kid before sitting up, carefully reeling in some of the slack from the line.]

See. Gotta eat somehow, in this place. This seemed like the best bet.

[So what if his personal fishing spot back home has no fish?]

[Killua can't hide the obvious interest in his expression as the fish is drawn in.]

...I only catch weird fish. Definitely not the edible kind.

[i.e. Don't ask this kid to fish for you. You will get electric eels and banana fish.]

[It's not a tough battle; the fish isn't too big, and even if he's rusty, it's still fishing. After a minute or so, the lines is pulled all the way in, Jack reaching to grab the wiggling fish with ease.]

Well, maybe all you need are a few lessons, huh? I'd be happy to teach ya, if you want.

[Gon's taught him plenty, he thinks, but he'd never fault Killua for being curious about other methods. He crouches down to get a good look at the fish. It almost looks normal enough to eat. He's sold.]

Yeah, sure. If you think you're good enough to teach me.

[He grins, extracting the hook from the fish's mouth before dropping the fish into an old chest he'd brought along with him to hold his catches.]

Fishing is my career. I think I know enough. Tell ya what, though. [And here, he holds out the fishing rod.] First, show me what you've got. We'll go from there.

[It's a moment before Killua realizes what the man is offering, and he takes the fishing rod in hand. He doesn't allow that self-consciousness to show for more than another second or two, however, and quickly casts. Not horrible, really, but it's not exactly smooth.]

[Watching with an experienced eye, it's easy for him to spot some of the problems with the boy's technique, and he has a fairly good idea how to fix it. For the most part, it'll just take a little practice once he knows what to do.]

Not bad. You need to adjust your grip though. You're holding it way too tight- keep holding it like that, and you'll make the bobber and the hook move too much. Gimme a sec.

[Jack steps back, then turns toward the cabin, not far away. From there, he retrieves the second pole he'd mentioned before, and returns to the lakeside.]

Here. Watch my hands closely. Hold it like this.

[Killua watches with a rare completely innocent interest, taking in everything Jack shows him and matching the older man's grip on the pole exactly.]

Like this, right?
