oh yeah -- until last month i worked in a game development group, so we played *everything*. :P
i'm just not a fan of two small screens -- i think the DS is an outdated form-factor with the result that your main game still takes place on a phone-sized screen.
that said, i'll admit that the game quality on the DS is wayyyy superior to the PSP -- thanks in part to a big portfolio of GBA-friendly franchises like metroid and castlevania, both of which i'm a huge fan of. i'd just argue that you could ship the most of the really good stuff on the GBA and not lose much. :P
i think you've said it all by mentioning game quality. i don't care about HD or dvd-compatablity, i just want the best games. and those games seem to always come from nintendo, sega, and rockstar. i have an xbox and the only games i ever played for any stretch of time approaching a nintendo title were jet set radio future and grand theft auto: vice city.
i'm a huge survival horror fan -- and capcom, konami and tecmo reign supreme there. but silent hill, fatal frame and res evil are ps2 or xbox. FPS is a tossup, with metroid prime pwning on gamecube and the rest on xbox. ps2 has the coolest music games except for donkey konga, etc. etc. etc.
nintendo has a niche and some great franchises, but i don't think i could ever limit myself to any one system, which is why i have 'em all hooked up at the same time. :P
