A few words on America
Some days he feels like he has multiple personality disorder.
It probably comes with being a Nation. He's never talked to anyone about it, because...well, it's personal. And the other Nations---
They always like to complain about America the Isolationist, America doesn't pay attention to Europe, blah blah. Except that's kind of the fucking point, because America has always attracted people that Europe doesn't want, or don't want Europe. [Yeah, and England? Fucking thanks for those Puritans. Oh, it's fine, because, you know, two hundred years later America can talk about sex without feeling disgusting. He's not pissed about that or anything.]
But it was...man! Was there even a word for it? Maybe China had one.
Okay, see. He was fucking America. He was about progress. So he moved ahead, he didn't look back, he got the newest games[maybe not always as early as, say, Japan, but pretty damn good].
Except.
Sometimes he has these weird--okay, not fits of nostalgia, because he's not an old man like some Nations he could name.
He loves pop music, of course, but sometimes he sees a piano, and thinks--Joplin, and he can see the guy there, and no matter what he does, it's Ragtime in his head the rest of the day. [if he's lucky; if not, it's the rest of the week, and then he starts humming it without noticing and people recognize it, but they're all old people, and what is wrong with him?]
And. Every February, he finds a little time to visit Kentucky and Illinois. He cries every year, too, remembering a man who joked about how ugly he was, spoke beautifully, and loved America. America loves him back, and it's not--it's not gay, or anything, he just--
England would probably sneer about the beautiful part, [Beautiful? That back country lawyer?]but he can go fuck himself, because Abraham Lincoln was a goddamn beautiful speaker, and--
And then he cries. He's kind of like this about Kennedy, too, but it isn't as bad. Kennedy is fresher, more personal to many people, but the Cold War didn't rip up his insides, the battles he won didn't make him sick, make him feel like he was breaking, going to--to explode or something any minute---
okay, the Cold War kind of did make him feel like he might explode, but it was different.
Today, it seems like people don't care as much about that, and yeah! That's progress, cause he's AMERICA and he looks to the future.
But he's terrified one day he'll forget. Not him personally, but his people, and that--it would break something, he knows.
Shit.
He hates feeling like this. He's the Hero, and a Hero doesn't get anything done by worrying. But he can't make it go away and stay gone.
Yeah. Fuck. Maybe he should go bug Japan.
