Introduction, and another protest idea

Mar 19, 2008 11:26

Uh, greetings. I'm Cody, and I'm new here. My opposition to LJ Plus accounts isn't so much with having to see ads on the 'user interface' pages on LJ (I can deal with that if it's absolutely necessary), as much as it is having them plastered on my own content with no control over which ads show up. Suffice it to say, it's really frustrating when ( Read more... )

I think it's worth a try, though I don't know how many people have plus accounts. I am letting my paid account run out and migrating to InsaneJournal, so it will revert to Basic until they decide Basic shouldn't exist at all.

Hm... that is something else I was sort of wondering about. But of course, they also weighed the pros and cons when there were pros and cons to weigh... and I'm sure there'd be some who'd be willing to get rid of features if it meant a chance that other people wouldn't be required to have ads. But then again, it probably wouldn't be many anyway...

Last year a friend of mine made her new journal a Plus account. When I joked that I was willing to forgive her for the ads if she would get lots of really, really nice userpics, it turned out that she wasn't even aware of it, she had just accepted the default (and to this day she has no userpics). Judging from the people and communities on my friends list with Plus accounts, only one or two icons, and no entries with polls, it looks like more people do that. No careful weighing of pros and cons there.

When my friend signed up, he didn't even notice the ads vs. no-ads. He just saw a lot of check-marks, a free price, and went with it. I'm sure I could convince him to revert to Basic.

I've already switched from Plus to Basic as a protest and recommended this action in my Russian journal. I believe you've got a great idea!

I think nobody's mentioned it because we've always been, as a general rule, advocates of switching to Basic for the most part. We have a guide and everything.

Right, obviously, I wasn't talking about the people here - I was talking about us spreading the word elsewhere, but I don't even know where to start.

When you block ads, do people still get money for them?

I've been considering what would happen if LJ forced me to go to paid or plus. It seems like they'd get less money from me if I went to paid, but maybe not if I did plus with blocked ads.

Not that I'm aware of--revenue from a paid user still tops revenue from ads for a Plus user.
