Combatting Sponsored+ Abuse

Apr 26, 2006 00:57

So recently I've read this anti-ad post by insomnia, which I felt had a decent number of interesting reasons I haven't really seen vocalized much in the whole news/lj_biz kerfluffle.

One thing insomnia mentioned to think about: how can the abuse of Sponsored+ accounts be prevented? What prevents users from signing up for a separate Sponsored+ account they use for image hosting in their real LJ? Or making voice posts and linking directly to the MP3 file? Or when directory search is enabled, making a Sponsored+ account just to do directory searches and using their other journals at all other times?

insomnia repeats a slogan I've heard from others, too, like jamesd, which goes to the effect of "Friends don't make friends see ads". I think that's pretty much our position, and jesspark has made a icon with that statement. I'm considering making it the community's icon: what say you all?

The user created ad voting is open for business over in lj_ads. Edit: And hey, the first icon in jessparks' set gets mention in the post! Go jessparks!
