I opened my eyes slowly and found myself staring into a darkened room…my sitting room. My first feeling was one of confusion…

Why was I on the couch? Had I fallen asleep?

But then a throbbing in my jaw - a really painful throbbing at that - reminded me about my little excursion with the troops and not to mention running into Mr broody pants himself, or should I say his sodding fist.

Never could just bloody say hello to a bloke, could he?

Lifting a hand to touch my jaw tentatively and wincing when it smarted, I sat up slowly. My head hurt, too. Bloody well throbbed, actually. Just one of the many perks of being human that I’d yet to get used to; just how badly injuries buggered me up. ‘Course copping one right in the sodding teeth from some wanker with superhuman strength wasn’t exactly a giggle when you were a vampire either.

Oh yeah, peaches and I were going to have to have ourselves a little heart to heart when next I saw him. Nice friendly conversation about how unprovoked violence isn’t really befitting a big strapping champion like himself. But my mind went back to how unbalanced, how…well, sodding crazy he seemed…perhaps it’d pay to wait. Find out exactly how unbalanced we were talking here. Never know, maybe he’d given up the big strapping champion gig all together.

I got up slowly and walked to the fridge for some ice. The flat was all but silent except for the soft voices coming from the patio. Tara and Connor, it sounded like and that lifted my spirits a might and I found myself more than eager to see my girl and check if she was feeling any better. I bent to pick up a tea towel and my head throbbed alarmingly. Might have a talk with the boy about his psychotic father while I was out there, too.

I finished wrapping some ice in a tea towel and held it against my jaw - grimacing as the chill of the ice made the bruised flesh smart - and headed out onto the porch. The stars were well and truly out and there was no sign of the others so I’d wager I’d been out for the count for more than a little while. I was itching to know what was going on, too and where they’d all gone. Never know, maybe it was my lucky night and they’d taken Peaches to a nice comfy padded cell somewhere. I grinned to myself at the thought.

“Sod it,” I muttered quietly when pain lanced through my jaw. That great tosser better not’ve broken anything, I might not pack the punch that I used to but that didn’t mean I’d forgotten how to use a bloody stake. Seems to me that he might need reacquainting with one if he’d started throwing his weight - and his fists - around with humans again.

Opening the door to the patio, I stepped out to find Tara and Connor looking mighty cosy together. A spark of jealously flared inside me before I realised I was being a bleedin’ moron and got a grip on myself. Tara would never do anything like that; she wasn’t the type of bird for a start. Still, didn’t mean I couldn’t have a bit of fun with ‘em, right?

“You and your old man working as a team, now?” I asked from behind them. “He knocks a bloke unconscious and you move in on his woman?”
