First, a rather personal squee for the victory of Boris Tadic, the Democratic candidate in yesterday's presidential elections in Serbia. YAY!!!!! He won against the Radicals' candidate by only about 2% - scary but sufficient - and I'm so relieved I can't even articulate it.
(Btw, the sad part is that I strongly suspect I'd vote for Tadic in any election regardless of the man's politics, not because he's smart and experienced and consistent and remarkably diplomatic and capable of making difficult decisions and compromises in a highly polarized political climate, but because he is... how do I put this... oh, yes: INCREDIBLY HOT. It's voting by hormones! I can't help it! And you know, I'm only joking a little bit.)
Anyway, I know this victory isn't NEARLY as significant as the Giants beating the Patriots last night, but... you know. Thought I'd share. ;)
Second, behold mah squee for last night's House:
I haven't really thought about this much, but "Frozen" is very likely my favorite episode of this show (though I might have to rewatch my Egan-penned faves for a final verdict). Why, you ask?
1. Phenomenal PotW. Unlike the often unbelievably insightful PotWs who'd wander in, dispense profound words on the state of House's psyche - thus telling us what we should be thinking - Cate was a PSYCHIATRIST. Further, it's very likely that she knew a few things about House already because they work for the same institution, and his reputation must have preceeded him. Still, her insight into House's personality actually made sense, and that was a lovely thing to behold on a show threaded with insta!detectives eager to "diagnose" the protagonist.
Plus, Mira Sorvino KICKS ASS. She's hot, but not gratuitously so; she's believably brilliant (not every actress can pull that off); she knows how to play confidence effortlessly. In a word: WOW.
2. The "long distance diagnosis" setup. Honestly, I groaned when I saw the preview; it felt like yet another plot devised to raise the bar and viewership numbers for the night. What we got instead was an exceptional change of dynamic that raised an issue the show doesn't explore too often -the power of medical practitioners over their patients - and waved it in front of House's nose like a red flag. He is often rather casual with his diagnosing process, using treatment for his latest (albeit highly educated) guess to discover more about the illness. As I might have mentioned back when this show started airing, this creeps me out A LOT. It was great to see House in a situation where he HAD to justify his decisions for perfectly valid reasons. Aaaaaand OK, I thought the setting was actually cool. ;)
Also, I doubt I'm the only one who got a thrill out of all that communication via computer monitors; right? The show's producers and writers are probably aware of their fans' use of/reliance on the Internet. The fact that Cate paradoxically became the patient with whom House established the closest relationship so far BECAUSE he could only reach her through the monitor, and that they've clearly shared a certain intimacy (my love for Wilson is endless, endless, I tell you!), is just... sublime. Yes.
3. The humor. Oh, the dialogue was consistently terrific! Let's not forget the physical comedy, though: Wilson RUNNING AWAY from House makes me laugh out loud whenever I think about it! A few other moments from an episode filled with worthy examples: Foreman declaring that House had been "wooing" him for years; Cate telling House that she can HEAR the music he'd just "added" to her self-exam; Wilson's "yo momma" joke; Kutner telling House "I love you" and House replying with "...WRONG." And many, many others. Pure gold, people.
4. Somebody FINALLY saying that House DOESN'T NEED FIXING. THANK YOU, WRITERS!!!!!!! I've been waiting and waiting and waiting to hear somebody (anybody! even an unsympathetic character!) say that about House, and it finally happened. Thank you, Cate. THANK YOU.
And you know, the whole misery thing was pretty well handled too - perhaps because the issue was not "why oh why doesn't House seek help with his clearly crippling misery?" but "why is House best friends with someone who keeps addressing the issue of his (alleged - heh) misery?" Which is actually kinda nice.
5. Somebody FINALLY saying that Wilson IS NOT AS NICE AS PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK. Because OMFG, YES!!!!!
(Yeah... I strongly suspect that Cate might be my favorite PotW.)
6. Ducklings 2.0 finally GETTING IT after an exercise with the former champion in Pushover-ness! (Well, more or less - Taub still looks a bit skittish, and Kutner is hilariously overdoing it - but yeah, they're growing some balls.) And once again, go Thirteen! I  you. Please wear suspenders on Tuesday; I've missed them. Also, if it turned out that you were Wilson's new girlfriend, my head might have exploded. Just saying.
7. Lots and lots of Wilson. I just have to say I am completely pro topless oncology; also, when Amber a.k.a. Cutthroat Bitch appeared on the screen, I shouted "OMG, Wilson is dating the female House!!!"... so when that preview happened, I did some quality screaming into my fists. Then I watched it a few more times, and did some more screaming.
(This pairing is OFFICIALLY GOING CANON, people. Even if all they do is make jokes/speculate about it. IT STILL COUNTS.)
Also, how awesome is it that Amber is totally TALLER than Wilson? VERY AWESOME!
8. Bonus points for the exceptionally gross injuries and medical procedures, from which I still couldn't look away because it was kind of... uh, fascinating. (Oh, hell. Now I know why people watch Survivor.) Also, MASSIVE bonus points for the History of Medicine!catnip, which we sadly haven't seen on the show in quite a while - that stuff is damn cool.
That concludes my squee because I'm starving; time to hunt and gather. Boy, am I looking forward to reading the flist's reactions to this ep!
OH, SHOW. When you're good, you're FANTASTIC.
