Nanao jerked awake, sweat sliding down her forehead as she sat up, staring into the dark. The room was silent, other than the soft white noise of a fan trying to move heavy air and the heavy breaths that were finally starting to slow down. She turned baleful eyes to the blue-green numbers atop her dresser, then sighed. 4:38 am… At least it’s not three this time.

With a groan, she pushed the sheet off of her and sat up, still warm skin protesting the motion. Her mouth cracked open in a wide yawn, one time she didn’t bother to cover it. Her gaze traveled the span of her room, from her bedside table with its lamp and the books she’d almost fallen asleep with last night, to the desk across the room, to where her laptop sat, still open but powered off.

She decided on neither one, already thinking of going to the roof, but changed her mind before the thought even coalesced. She climbed out of bed and made her way into the bathroom, taking the time to wash her face and drape the cool cloth over the back of her neck.

While the cloth heated up to her skin temperature, she pondered why she felt so restless. As she reached for the bottle of aloe, the reason snapped into focus. She dropped the now warm cloth into the sink and headed for the door, snagging her keys on the way out.

As quietly as she could, she set off up the stairs, not pausing until she stopped in front of apartment 21. Her feet had carried her there almost on their own, but she was glad they had.

She didn’t like leaving things at odds between them, but she wasn’t sure she’d be exactly welcome at the moment. Her words had been almost harsh to him, not that she’d wanted them to be.

The key slid in the door quietly, but the door was a bit louder when she cracked it open, the subtle creaking sounding loud in the darkness. She hissed under her breath, then craned her neck around, looking for any signs of someone stirring in the apartment. When no one stormed out (namely Kurenai) for being noisy, she knew she was safe. The door locked behind her, she made a beeline straight for Hayate’s room.

Once in the doorway, she paused, openly staring down at him for a long moment. He was sprawled on his bed, a light sheet twisted around his hips. His recent weight loss was glaringly obvious to her, but she didn’t dwell on it. Instead, her eyes scanned up his torso and locked onto his face. The sight of his peaceful expression brought a slight smile to her face.

Carefully, she moved to sit beside him, her slight weight barely shifting the bed. She leaned down and brushed a barely there kiss to his forehead, lips featherlight against his skin as she whispered something to him. “I do love you… I hope you know that.”

Satisfied he was resting for the time being, she laid down beside him, on top of the sheets, and curled up, eyes drifting closed as she watched him.
