[Backdated to the night of March 29th]
Sakura finished the spell-check and gave a triumphant little chuckle. Finally that paper was done, her equations for Ad. Chemistry were completed and...no more cold! The best of all. Now she could rest...although she really just wanted to give the kitchen a new cleaning.
But she'd promised Ino that she wouldn't stress her ankle more than necessary. Sakura closed her laptop and limped from her room, settling on the couch and grabbing one of the old medical books Tsunade had lent her.
A triumphant knock came from the door then. Orihime had promised hugs and helping to consume the sugar, after all, and Orihime did her best to never ever break a promise. Especially not one where hugs or sugar was involved. She considered herself an expert on both subjects and could always use extra company.
Sakura looked up and glanced at the clock. That must be Orihime. She quickly got up and limped to the door, throwing it open with a great big smile. Sakura was still on a 'just finished all my homework' high, plus no cold meant no having to wipe her bruised nose constantly.
Needless to say, add in all the sugar she had consumed in the past few hours and you have a very happy Sakura.
"My goodness! Sakura, what happened to you!" Orihime's bright and cheerful smile faded into worry when she saw the state of her friend. She's heard a few cryptic comments, of course, but had no idea it was as bad as this. Seeing the other girl this way set off all of Orihime’s maternal instincts and she just wanted to hug the other girl and make sure she was okay.
Rarely able to resist these urges, Orihime hugged Sakura but was mindful of her bruises.
Sakura hugged her back. "Just some trouble. Ino and Ichigo are helping me take care of it, so don't worry." She pulled away and smiled at the other girl. "Come on in!" She hopped to the side a bit so Orihime could enter, genuinely glad to see the red-headed girl.
"Well, okay." it was little surprise to those that knew her that as soon as Orihime heard Ichigo was on the case, she automatically assumed everything would be okay and taken care of. "How are you feeling?" she was unable to keep from asking, though, as she stepped inside the apartment, holding her skirt so it would not catch on the doorway as it was sometimes apt to do.
"My cold is gone so I feel really good." Sakura closed the door. She knew that mentioning Ichigo would take care of any other questions. Orihime seemed to hold the orange haired man in a type of...well, awe was too strong a word. Sakura wasn't sure how to explain it. "I hope you're hungry, because I have cake and fudge and candy. And I'm incredibly sugar high so be prepared for long rants."
She limped to the kitchen and beckoned for Orihime to follow her.
"Sugar highs are the best kind of highs!" though Orihime did her best to keep her vices to a minimum -- at Tatsuki's urgings she rarely ate any food that was not organic, she didn't smoke or drink and didn't even drink caffeine -- sugar was something Orihime was terribly weak to. She followed Sakura, practically skipping at the prospect of sharing sugary goods and spending time with a friend.
"Great!" Sakura grinned, limping to the fridge, opening it. She pulled out the pink and purple...thing that Ichigo had made, along with the other things. "We are going to have much fun! Oh! Did you ever get my idea on having a monthly meeting to discuss important things like WAP and ZAP?"
The idea of being attacked by werewolves and zombies were rather silly to Sakura's mind. But...indulging in silliness with Orihime was a great deal of fun. It made Sakura feel like a kid - in the good way.
Orihime laughed happily. "Oh yes! It sounds excellent! I've been trying to decide on a good day for everyone. Something like 'the second Sunday of every month', you know!" Orihime said with a smile. "After all, this is important information, people should know. I'm posting flyers later today!"
"We could make graphs! I love graphs!" Sakura agreed, cutting the cake and putting two decent sized pieces on some plates before handing one to Orihime. She grinned, almost laughing. Which felt good. Very much so; Sakura hadn't really laughed in the past few weeks.
"Oh me too! Have you ever been to the Flying Spaghetti Monster webpage? They have great graphs, to show things like how there's global warming because of less pirates in the world. They're very convincing." Orihime said with all seriousness.
"No, I'll definitely check it out." Sakura grabbed two forks and sat down at the rickety table they kept against the wall as a sort of...eating area for whoever was in the kitchen at the moment. Wasn't like there was really a dining room area. "Sit down, Ori!"
Letting out a small yelp, Orihime very obediently pulled out a chair and sat at the table, hiding a smile like a disobedient child. "Thank you for the cake, Sakuraaaa." she sang, wondering what something baked by Ichigo would taste like. She hadn't known him to cook if he could help it.
"You weeeeeelcome!" Sakura sang back. It occurred that she really needed to introduce Orihime to Ino sometime if the two didn't know each other. Ino would probably get a kick out of the red head. Sakura took a bite of her cake; it wasn't that bad. Ichigo could be kinda sweet in his own way.
In fact, Orihime had not yet met Ino, though she had heard of the other girl. With work and life, Orihime was falling behind on keeping up with all the new arrivals and she was not happy about that one bit.
But right now, there was cake. And it was good. "Aaah, this is really yummy! Maybe I can harass Ichigo into making me a cake for my birthday." Orihime said thoughtfully after a few bites of the cake, some frosting still clinging to her cheek.
"He should." Sakura agreed promptly, absently grabbing a napkin and wiping Orihime's cheek. "And if he doesn't think of it on his own I will pester him. I'm very good at doing that, you know."
Orihime held still, smiling a little as she let Sakura wipe the extra frosting off of her cheek. "Thank you again, Sakuraaaa." She said, in response to both her actions and her words.
"No problem." Sakura chuckled. "You should have seen me earlier. I dropped a piece of cake on my foot and had to change my bandage." The pink haired girl grinned at Orihime, a sort of laughing look in her green eyes.
"Oh my goodness! ... Such good cake gone to waste! That really is a tragedy!" Orihime said, looking absolutely shocked.
"I know." Sakura instantly sobered. "I had to mourn it after cleaning up the evidence of it's demise."
"It must have been truly heart-wrenching. At least the rest of it survived." Orihime said in consolation, reaching out to cover Sakura's hand with her own.
"Yes, we have that at least." Sakura sadly agreed and dramatically sighed.
After a moment in silence, Orihime took Sakura's fork to take up a small piece of cake, holding it up to her. "Cheer up, we must celebrate those gone! Aaaaah!"
Sakura obediently let Orihime feed her and giggled around the mouthful of cake. She tucked her short hair behind her ears and took her fork back. "I agree!" She stood. "Do you want something to drink? We have water and water with ice."
Smiling brilliantly, Orihime nodded. "Water with ice please!"
"As you wish, m'dear." Sakura quickly got two glasses and was back a moment later. "We still have fudge to consume. I'm telling you, Ori, this stuff is like...heaven."
"I can't wait!" Orihime took another bite of cake before continuing her trail of thought. "How have you been, other than the stuff Ichigo and Ino are helping you with?" she asked, hoping to catch up with how her friend was doing.
"School's okay. Work is...work." Sakura chewed thoughtfully and then hesitated. "Ori...I..." It was funny, she didn't know how to broach the subject. "Have you...ever had a guy like you? I mean...really, really like you? Only you weren't sure if you liked him back?"
Watching Sakura for a moment curiously, Orihime averted her eyes back down to her plate, studying her cake thoughtfully. "...No. Never." she said simply. No, she was never in the position of the one loved, only the one doing the loving. "But I'll listen anyway if you want to talk?"
"It's okay. I'll just...have to think about it." she took another bite. "...I just don't want to hurt him. I just don't know if I...if I'm capable of feeling..." she broke off shaking her head and taking a drink of water. "Well, that was a conversation killer." Sakura commented wryly, setting her glass down.
Setting her fork down on her plate, Orihime broke manners and put an elbow on the table to rest her chin in her palm.
"What's he like?" she asked, quietly.
"Overwhelming. Kind. Trusting. He's...so alive. And his emotions are so readable; like he doesn't even try to hide what he's feeling." Her fork poked at her cake and Sakura smiled slightly. "Totally different from my usual type. Used to always fall for the mysterious, brooding guys. He's so cheerful though; always puts a smile on. He makes me laugh..." she paused. "Makes me feel safe."
Another smile graced Orihime's face at how Sakura was describing her mystery man. "He sounds wonderful."
"I know. And that's what scares me. Because I..." she blew out a slightly frustrated breath. "I don't know why I'm holding myself away from him." she looked at the other girl. "I...I don't know what I'm afraid of."
Considering the other girl for a moment, Orihime thought of any number of reasons why Sakura might be holding herself back from what seemed like such a wonderful person. "...Is there someone else you love?" she asked.
"No." Sakura said distantly. "No...that's not it."
There hadn't been many men in her life. Just two; if a crush counted as one. And Hiroshi...well, in the end he hadn't been worth what she had given him.
"Are you scared of what might happen if you let him let you feel safe, then lose him?"
Sakura paused, her fork stabbing at the cake ceasing. She was silent for a long time.
"Maybe." she finally admitted, looking down at her plate. "...Maybe."
After a moment, Orihime smiled again. "I think you should give it a shot. Let him know what you're worried about so he goes into it with his eyes open, but... you only live once, right?"
Yeah, you did. Sakura didn't say it aloud, but Orihime had a strong point. So she simply nodded.
"Yeah." The pink haired girl said after a minute. She took a breath. "Wow. Well, to be honest didn't expect to go into all that." She looked at Orihime and smiled. "Thanks. For listening."
"Anytime! That's what friends are for!" Orihime said brightly, just delighted she could help in some way. With a few more bites she finished off her slice of cake and washed it down with some water. "Now... you had mentioned fudge of some kind?"
"Yes." Back to the getting-sugar-high plan. Sakura smiled and went to get it from the fridge
