Tenten fitted the shirt on with a smile. Her friends had definitely picked this out and told her father to buy it. It was down to her knees and in a traditional Chinese cut made of a pure black silk adorned with a dragon that wrapped itself around her body. It was sleeveless, which would be perfect back home at this time of year. Considering

She'd been ready for hours, worrying and worrying that maybe she'd gotten the time wrong, or that maybe she was wearing the wrong clothes. Maybe. Ma-
The door opened with that loud creak that Soi Fong was only painfully aware of when guests were around. Taking in Tenten and her beautiful shirt, she felt so plain. Even in China she had given up her traditional clothing for the urban look, which translated into the western look. All she had on underneath her jean jacket was a black V neck and she'd managed to find a clean pair of jeans.
Still, she pasted on a stiff smile, and welcomed her inside. "Ah, there you are," she said in a smooth chinese as she stepped back. "Would you like some tea?"

"Sorry I was a bit late," she said taking a seat on the couch. "I had to finish up some things at school and got stuck talking a professor."
She stretched her arms a bit as she got comfortable. "How was your day? Ready for some fun tonight?"
Reply
"Today was good. Apparently, my English is getting better because only two people told me they wanted to talk to another cashier." She was careful as she stepped back into the living room (slow, slow...) so that she wouldn't spill the tea that was threatening to go over the edge. "And I don't think ready is the right word for it, anyway. How about you?"
She was glad to be rid of the burden as it went from her hands to Tenten's.

"But that's good with, that your English is getting better. I'm telling you, in a few months you won't even want to speak Chinese with me anymore."

She sat down herself, and let out a big breath of relief. Relax, Soi Fong, she told herself sharply. You can do it.
"So they don't feed you well, down there?" she began in a slightly teasing tone.

She felt as if she should follow that up with something, but...nothing came to mind. She'd never been a great conversationalist, and once she finished with a subject, that was it. So she made of a point of taking long sips to make up for her sudden silence.

But that was not to last.
Tenten finished her tea and sat up with a smile. "Yosh, we should head out if we want to get a table."

The water was cold to the touch, and her fingers ached as they rubbed at the grime at the bottom of the cups. There was no need to waste any hot water with two tea cups, but it was the little things like this that could embitter you.
She stacked them in the cabinet, still wet and the water seeping into the old wood. She didn't care, and entered the other room once more, rubbing her wet hands on her pants, leaving dark spots on her thighs.

She grabbed her jacket and threw it on, knowing that it would be a sauna outside the door. It was better that way since she would be freezing the second they stepped outside. She waited for Soi Fong at the door, letting her take her time to get ready.

She pushed the door open once more, and made sure that the door was well locked behind her. Occasionally it played a trick on her, and pretended to be closed shut. Just the door playing its little door tricks.
As they went down to the front door, Soi Fong seriously considered just turning around and avoiding the inevitable disaster that was impending.

"So... um, you're sure you want to go? We don't have to, you know... we can just go grab something to eat if you'd rather."

"I wouldn't rather." The curt words slipped out before her mind could think through the best response. It was rude, and she realized this, but she felt that by this time Tenten was more than a mere acquaintance, possibly verging on that fluctuating term: friend. She might as well learn that Soi Fong can be less than polite, and if you know her well enough, usually is.

A few spotlights had been set up and the crowd was rather dense right in front of the bar. It wasn't a big concert but the owners had obviously advertised heavily.
Tenten looked around and realized the front door was packed. She frowned a bit until she saw the back door. She tugged Soi's sleeve and pointed to the other door.

It was quieter as they approached it, the words and loud movements blocked by the building itself, if only a little. "Is this alright?" she asked giving it a wary gaze.

She pulled a hairpin from her hair and quickly worked at the lock, hearing it click a second later. Amateurs, she smiled.
"Come on, we'll just say we got lost if anyone asks," she said, walking inside.
