This is the Horsehead Nebula, seen through the Hubble Space Telescope. I decided to go with it because a dark background is better on your eyes than a bright one. It's a really beautiful image, and it's real, which freaks me out just a little but is exciting. Astronomical imagery is often breathtaking, and the Horsehead (within Orion's belt, apparently) is actually a Dark Matter Nebula, which should have been obvious at first but now strikes me as fascinating. My desktop is actually way cleaner and more productive than it was, say, 2 years ago, before I started thinking like a Mac and got an object dock and Rainlendar; I owe that bit of insight to Lifehacker.
