Jun 23, 2012 10:19

Thank you everyone for a great week of conversation and fic. It's been a pleasure to chat with you all. For today and tomorrow, I'd like to invite everyone to write some ficlets or drabbles (100 words) on two themes presented today and tomorrow.

Missing, PG-13 (warnings for implied non-canon character death) kdbleu June 23 2012, 17:21:01 UTC
“Divert the CAP,” she says. The words are clear and strong belying the panic in her chest so heavy that Kara can hardly breath. She stares straight on at the maelstrom, the swirl of colored clouds that she was sure was her way out. But it’s Lee who’s missing.

“Starbuck, this is actual.” Kara blinks recognizing her call sign and the Old Man’s voice. “You are the CAP.”

“Then the alert fighters. Get them out here.” She can feel herself beginning to break, crumble from the inside. A flash of light as she broke through the hard deck and then past the thick atmosphere of the giant planet behind her. “Get them… Get them…”

No Lee following. He promised.

“They’re on their way,” someone, maybe Gaeta, says.

“Now, get yourself home.” Protocols are gone, no callsign, just Adama speaking directly to her.

“No, I have to… I have to find him,” Kara answers.

She looks down at her hands clasped around the throttle. Her thumb hovers over the fire button though the raider she thought she saw is long gone. She simply floats in space surround by black and pin dot stars, the vastness of not seeing Lee condensing down to the nothing that’s inside of her. Until like a black hole she’s too heavy to move.

In her ear piece she hears the ambient noise of CIC, the scramble of alert fighters to back of the CAP she and Lee started. Slowly her hands begin to work again, loosening her grip to take proper control, pulling up and flying home. It’s rote, but she gets back to the hangar deck almost without remembering the act.

Then Kara sits in her bird with her helmet in her lap, thinking over and over that she doesn’t know where Lee is and that someone is going to ask her. It’s only a matter of time before requests both official and personal come in. She lost him out there because he wouldn’t let her die.

Lee Adama died for her.

Tears roll easily down her face. Sobs catch in her throat. The only time in her life, she stayed for him and it was too late.
