I'm now the parent.
My mom fell for a phishing email. Gave 'em everything- her SSN, bank acct. #s, passwords, etc. I think she may have even handed over one of my kidneys. And just minutes before, she was going to delete the email and leave it alone. I don't know what she was thinking. She clicked a link in an email, and didn't even think to look for the "s" in https, nor remember that you NEVER click links to sites in emails.
We've already called her bank, all 3 credit reporting agencies, and made a list of places for her to go tomorrow. First off- the Social Security Administration office, to alert them that her number has been "compromised". What they can do about that, I don't know. Then her current bank to close out those accounts and move them to my bank. Then she needs to call all the financial institutions where she has accounts (mortgage,IRA, 401k, etc). It's such a nightmare.
I paid 3 of her bills due this next week, with whatever I had in my account, even though my MASSIVE CC bill is due to arrive any day now, with my surgical charges on it. This just couldn't have happened at a worse time. Sucks that it even happened at all.
I love my mom, just not her naivete.
