Kitchen happiness

Ahh. I have fulfilled a dream.

More than a year ago I decided that the chest freezer wasn't working out for me. Energy efficiency be damned - if half the space is unusable because it's impossible to organize and you can't reach the bottom, there are more important energy issues to deal with.

Some time ago, my mom agreed to take my chest freezer when she finished and moved into her house. Well, the house is finished (mostly), and she's moved in (more or less). Sometime in the next week she's supposed to drive the truck into town to pick up her bed from my brother, who doesn't need it anymore since moving in with his girlfriend.

So yesterday I went to Baillio's and I bought myself a brand-spanking-new upright freezer. Buying things at Baillio's is always an adventure in slowness, but I persevered. (This time it was also an adventure in confusing directions; when I returned for pickup in my neighbor's truck, we were directed away from the usual loading dock to an unmarked door in an unmarked building around the corner.)

This morning I bought a few wire baskets for extra organization, and I emptied the old freezer into the new one. Two garbage bags of freezerburned food from the bottom of the chest freezer went into the dumpster. There was also plenty of room for my stash of whole grains, and a container for cokked whole grains (I have some Forbidden Black rice cooking right now, expressly to freeze and have ready to go at a moment's notice), and a selection of items from the indoor fridge freezer so I can shut the door without it trying to pop back open. And there's still space left!

I am ridiculously happy.
