Friday was the
Tech Crunch Crunchie Award Ceremony. Earthmine was nominated and all of Earthmine (all 6 of them) went. Oliver invited me along and I had a great time.
The award ceremony was good. The award ceremony had a bunch of categories, earthmine was nominated for Best Innovation/New Technology. We were not expecting to win since they are still in private beta and some of the other competitors had public beta or at least something for the public to see. But...
Earthmine won!
We were so surprised when they announced it and started whooping and cheering. John and Anthony picked up the award and Anthony gave a quick thank you speech thanking friends and family, the developers, the Jet Propulsion Lab and the Internet of course. It was a great surprise.
Oh and the Ritcher Scales performed "Here comes another bubble" at the ceremony which was pretty funny.

After the award ceremony there was an after party with an open bar. John and Anthony and all the winner went to the press center and so we had a champagne toast on our own to celebrate. While we were waiting for John and Anthony to come up, we kinda stood around chatting. We were standing near this somewhat empty part of the room and I noticed someone enter that pocket and pause as if looking for his buddies. Then I realized it was Kevin Rose, the founder of Dig! As a digger and occasional diggnation watcher I had been wanting to go to the Tech Crunchies just to meet him. I froze like a deer in the headlights as he stood 2 feet from me. He then walked away to his. As he was walking away I managed to unfreeze enough to grab Oliver and frantically kept saying "It's Kevin Rose! It's Kevin Rose! It's Kevin Rose!" Oliver then started to laugh because I apparently had turned bright red.
While we were standing around, someone suddenly said "There's MC Hammer!" I thought it was a joke but there he was, complete with several gold chains and his bling. Anthony, Christian and I ran up to him. Anthony told MC Hammer that he had won an award, and MC Hammer congratualted him. He then asked for a picture. Before taking the picture Anthony fist bumped him and said "Pumps and A bump!" MC Hammer said he was glad he remembered that song. (I had no idea what Pumps and a Bump was. Then i looked it up on
you tube. Oh. my.) Anthony then told MC Hammer that it was always his dream to buy MC Hammer's house in the Oakland Hills. After we took our picture, Kris, Anthony's cousin and the business plan/PR person for earthmine, told us that MC Hammer is really into tech and was pretty prominent during the first dot com boom. She said she once went to his party in the Fremont hills and that it was one of the craziest parties she had ever been too. I can only imagine...especially after watching Pumps and Bump.
Hammer time
After MC Hammer, I spotted Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of facebook. He was wearing a hoodie, of course, just like he was on 60 minutes last week. I point him out to Anthony. He told me I should meet him but I said I was too shy. Anthony handed me the award and we went over to Mark Zuckerberg. Anthony told Mark that I had won the Crunchie and that he should take a picture with me. I told him congrats on his win and that I would make this picture my facebook picture. And it is.
John said that it all almost felt like a dream. "A dream where I won award, which was a plastic monkey. And Mark Zuckerberg and MC Hammer were there too!"
John and I hold up the Crunchie award. Yup, it's a plastic monkey, as a reference to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey)
