So I can't graduate until I take my ONE REMAINING course for my minor. Alas, it's not offered again until SPRING of 2011. Dammit, they will get four years out of me, one way or another. Since I don't want to waste my time, I'm looking at what I can take in the fall. I am maxed out on my anth courses, but I don't care, I'm taking John Hale's underwater arch course anyway. Already read the book, and would pay to listen to Hale even if I got no credit for it. I just want to sort of sit by and bask in the glow of his brilliance. But what else to take? Ah, look! There's a historical research methods course! This could be fantastic for my genealogy work. It doesn't do much for my graduation, but it would give me a better foundation for my personal research project. And it says right there on the page, "Open to students of other disciplines."
So I try to add it. No go- I get the little red "x" instead of the happy green checkmark. I go to the fix errors page; it won't tell me what's wrong. So I phone up the history department. Sorry, ONLY OPEN TO HISTORY MAJORS. I tell her that it doesn't say that on the page, she insists it's open to hist majors and that "it won't do anybody else any good." I argue my point and tell her I'm a genealogist, I already have some background in working with public records, I just want to improve my research skills. Her tune changes dramatically- it'd be very useful for you, and if there's a space available perhaps we can squeeze you in, have you contacted the professor? I tell her he's not listed in the directory. She tells me, "Oh, sorry, he's not actually here yet; he's moving here in July." I ask if they have contact information. "I think he's in Washington. Or somewhere up north."
Head. Desk. As of today, there are 13 seats left. How much you want to bet that by the time he gets settled in, there's a waitlist?
