Secret Diary of a Call Girl

"Escort, Hooker, Prostitute, Whore.  I don't care what you call me, that's just semantics."

So I know that a guilty pleasure show is one that you should be embarrassed about watching... that you don't want to admit that you watch.  Well... I don't really have any of those.  If I watch something I say that I do.  There are a few shows though that I normally wouldn't watch but do for whatever reason.  Secret Diary of a Call Girl is one of them.  I'll be completely honest.  I started watching this show because Billie Piper was in it.  Anything she's in I'll watch even if it's not my kind of show.  When I tell people I watch a show about a call girl they look at me a bit funny sometimes... like I can see them judging me.  It's just not something that most people would watch.  Then say it's on Showtime and it's a bit worse.  Not that I don't watch other shows on Showtime or even HBO, both channels have graphic sex scenes and nudity but those seem much more acceptable.  The Tudors is also about history.  Big Love is about polygamy and politics.  Dexter is about a serial killer that kills other killers or bad people.

With Secret Diary it's just about a call girl and her sexcapades.  Or so everyone thinks.  Yeah there's a lot of sex in the show.  And not just normal every day sex... they love to find the wacky customers and show just how crazy a call girl's work can get.  But the show isn't just about sex.  That's only on the outside though.  The show is so much more than that.  It's not just about Belle de Jour and her many clients.  It's about Hannah Baxter.  You get to see how she actually became a call girl.  It's kind of sad really.  She picked someone up at a bar and the next morning he had given her cab money and so much more.  Like this couldn't happen to anyone?  Granted she did continue to do it for money, found herself a madame and everything but it's just interesting to see the behind the scenes stuff.  We have to see Hannah struggle trying to keep her secret from her best friend, Ben, and her family.  I think her father suspects but her mother and sister have no idea, even when her sister stays with her.  S1 is all about the clients and Ben finding out what she does.  Coming to terms that his best friend is a hooker.  S2 Hannah does something she never thought she'd do.  She tries to have a normal relationship.  She gets a boyfriend, Alex, but he has no idea what she is. She also becomes a mentor for another call girl, Bambi.  At the end of S2 she's written a book and in S3 it's all about her writing her second book and being encouraged to have eveven more outrageous clients... who's doing the encouraging?  Her editor, Duncan, whom she realy likes.  SDoaCG isn't just about the clients, it's about the personal life of the call girl, the emotional struggle she goes through to live a normal life outside of her job.  I'm surprised by how much I love this show to be honest but I think it's because it's not just about sex. It's about more.  Billie is wonderful in the lead role. She brings the humor and sex appeal that's needed but she also brings the emotions, the sadness and anger.  She plays Belle/Hannah perfectly.

Oh and another reason I watch Secret Diary of a Call Girl?  Billie Piper is so hot in all of Belle's costumes and lingerie.  Her body is amazing and the shallow part of me keeps watching just because of this.  I can't help it.  It's what you do for your girl crushes right?  Plus James D'Arcy and Callum Blue both guest starred on this show... more hotness.  The entire cast, aside from some of the clients, are gorgeous.  Thank goodness for Iddo being in every season too.  So much eye candy.
