so i have a bad memory with names but they're all written down somewhere... ill refer to them when i come home.
so on tuesday we finished our three day study of the holocaust by going to Yad Vashem, the National Holocaust Museum of Israel (located in Jerusalem). The museum is very informative, not extremely depressing or disturbing. I have never been the Holocaust Museum of Washington (DC) ... though ive had many opportunities... in fact, my one experience was the restrooms...and to get to them, i had to take the elevator which was built as a gas chamber... i didn't appreciate it much. in anycase...
Monday we went to a museum which was created by the survivors of the Poland ghettos. there was a lot of information about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising...which is really inspiring, though truly tragic. we also went to the Carmel Mountains where we learned about Hannah Senesh, a young woman from Europe who came to Israel and then went back to Europe to fight the Nazi's as a paratrouper (she unfortunatly died while in combat). To culminate our studies in a refreshing way, everyone went paintballing on tuesday evening, i was invited to my physics teacher's house w/ my phy partner and the teacher's third phy student (another girl from my dorm). so the three of us had a lovely meal w/ our teachers family. (oh, home cooked meals are delightful when you're used to cafeteria food...let me tell you...)
in anycase... we've since moved on. we are now studying the more modern history of Israel. Israeli Independence +....
so yesterday we went to the Mediterranian to study about illegal immigrants who came to Israel and how the israeli's helped them land. we went to a DP Camp (displaced persons) where the brits put the illegal immigrants until further... w/e. (some were returned to europe, some went to cyprus, and eventually some broke out) we also went to Acco prison where the british kept and sometimes hung fighters for israel. (including one famous man, Dov ??? (i cant' remember his last name) anyway... really famous guy who tried to help a whole lot of jews) right...then we did a fun thing...we went to the north (the lebanese border) and went to Gratto caves... limestone caves that have been carved out by the mediterranian sea ...we walked through them and saw where the water has collected inside...really pretty view too...
i had my first experience w/ israeli (uhm..?) fear? (not the right word) there was a hightened security alert in Hod Hasharon yesterday evening, so rather than letting us out for dinner in the Hod, we went to a mall in Rannanah (a neighboring county) and by the time we got back to school, the alert had been lifted so we were again let out. i didn't get the full story, but apparently they arrested someone suspected of something and were still making sure it was safe. apparently it wasn't such a big deal, but big enough to not let us out of the dorms. (we weren't affected by it, since we werent at school or in the area)
right... well... thats about all...today we studied the War of Independence ...we're up to 1949 and have about 60 years left to cover.
hm... ok. time for class now, but i thought id update first.
ps. i forgot to mention... we watched a movie on the sobibor escape (a death camp in poland) ... it was so realistic and capturing...i was on edge for more than half the movie... (it was succesful, and the camp was closed down after the escape)
