No better way to start the day than with a hard drive failure.
At first I thought it was the SSD that was bad. Which would be annoying, since the operating system is installed on that. But wait, no. It's worse. It's my regular drive -- with all my files and password files and money info and... everything.
I'm hoping that it's a temporary failure and maybe I can coerce the drive to cooperate one last time so I can get stuff off of it. But I think that's an overly optimistic assessment. And of course mucking around with installing/uninstalling the drive is a pain in the aardvark.
Just... ugh.
Update: On the good side, it looks like my Moneydance files are intact on the SSD drive. That means I still know how much money I have in the bank, and recent transactions, and all that good stuff. On the bad side, I realized that not only did I lose my password file (it'll be "fun" trying to remember and reset all of the passwords I have without that), I also lost all my pictures of puppies and tortoises, and even a few videos I had of them. Plus, of course, every single script program I've ever written that wasn't for my employer.
The lesson for the day is "back your stuff up, you dork." You would think that I'd learn my lesson by now, this isn't the first hard drive failure I've ever had. Just the one where I've lost the most information and irreplaceable files.
We've since moved past "ugh" to cursing like a sailor, but I don't think I really need to write that down here.
