I KNEW they were scammers.

I was talking on the phone to a friend the other day when a door to door salesperson arrived. She kept me on the phone whilst speaking to them so I could hear the spiel.

At the end she asked me what I thought and I told her that they were scammers - if it was a legit deal of saving money by changing providers to them, ask for any leaflet material they had and tell them that she'd get her husband to read it through before deciding. The door to door person told her that she didn't have any and that she must sign up NOW.

My friend asked why she had to sign for a free gift from her own electricity provider - and was told that yes, they were able to save her money, the signature was to change them to TruEnergy! the salesperson also tried to con my friend into revealing who owned the house - and now I've read your entry, I know why.

The legal ramifications of having the electricity bill in the Landlords name are so wide! I mean... what if there is a dispute and the landlord simply disconnects the power and the renter can't get it reconnected?

What if, the landlord dies or sells the house - who is responsible for the bill then? In many ways, the renter could actually get out of paying a very high utility bill because it's not in their name, thus not their 'legal' right to pay it.

Another side effect is when a renter is proving their residency in an address, they don't have a utility bill in their name to do so. That's a big deal these days!
