"They collected the world in small handfuls." - from The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
Many good things have caused my world to change a bit, putting me on a more solitary path at times and I therefore want to try to post to my journal on a semi-regular basis - to keep me in touch with my thoughts... and possibly in touch with the livejournal community. We’ll see how this goes.
In small handfuls, here is my world these days:
- The most magical tidbit is that I am a MOM! My beautiful baby girl was born September 20th. I wasn’t quite sure this day would ever come and, still surreal, it’s pure joy.
- I have also become a stay-at-home-mom, leaving a day job that was less than fulfilling. For this opportunity, I am so grateful. I enjoy spending each day with my daughter and look forward to using any free time I have to read and write, embarking on new projects and unearthing some old ones.
- Speaking of reading, I’ve just started Brave New Girl by Louisa Luna. It’s one of many books that have sat for awhile on my shelf unread… I don’t know much about it but I’m really drawn to the character of Doreen already, probably because that confused and pained teenager inside of me has surfaced a bit these days. I’m a very slow reader but I would like to be a more disciplined, active reader. I think, too often, I grow tired of a story not because of the story itself but because of the time it is taking me to read the story (which is not cool).
-And speaking of active reading, I’ve begun to read to my baby - I hope me reading aloud to her is an activity she will enjoy as she grows. I read a lot when I was young but not so much as I got into those preteen and teen years - I missed out on the comfort that is found in a good story at a time when I needed that comfort the most. I want my daughter to learn the power of reading early on (!).
Thanks for taking the time to read this post... While my new baby girl is napping, I'm going to get back to Brave New Girl :)
