So today, I ran some errands with my mom.
The last place we went to was the dollar store in Montgomery Village Center.
We arrived there around 12:25. As I was getting out of the car, I saw a dog in the green grand cherokee next to me, all by himself. A beautiful black lab - windows down, panting. I was really upset. The car had NC plates on it.
Mom and I went in the store and I just kept thinking about that dog. I called my dad at 12:30 (yes, I'm typing everything out just in case something happens to me - which it shouldn't because I have a great case.) He gave me the number for animal control. The number he gave me was 301-279-1694. I went back to my car, and the owner was leaning against his jeep smoking a cigarette (maybe around 5'8?) blonde hair, black shirt. He was tan. I pretended to search in my car for something. I noticed him walking back in the Denny's. I waited a minute, walked in, and saw him sitting at a table near the door w/a girl (perhaps a gf or wife? She was a little bit shorter, short brown hair, and a blue tank top on, flip flops also I believe) and an elderly couple. There food was not there. Just drinks and maybe menus were still there? I don’t remember about the menus. I went over there and politely said, “Excuse me, are you the ones with the jeep that has the dog in it?” They said, “yes.” I’m not trying to be rude but it’s illegal to leave a dog unattended in the car. It upsets me greatly to see a dog left unattended.” Well they started jumping up and down my throat throwing the following things at me: There’s water in there, I just walked him, The windows are down, We are only going to be 30 minutes. Each excuse they gave me, I responded with, “It’s still against the law to leave a dog unattended in the car - no matter how long!” (mind you, denny’s takes longer than 30 minutes…..) Also, the dog was panting - hot and humid outside. I said if they did not take care of it, I was going to call Animal Control. I walked out of the restaurant.
I walked over to my car to write down the license plate number, and the exact type of car. All of a sudden I hear a ROAR and turn around to see the lady pretending to be a lion and scare me. I said, “You don’t scare me bitch!” They both said, “Do you know how much we love our dog?” I said that I have a dog and love her too but it’s illegal to leave a dog unattended in a car. I then walked away with my information so I could call animal control.
As I’m calling the number my dad gave me, I see the lady walking the dog across the parking lot, and the man drove the car in that same direction. The number I had was an incorrect number (12:43.) So at 12:44 I called 411 to ask for animal control. They forwarded me to Montgomery County Police. I explained the situation. The cop asked if I still saw the car. I said, “As a matter of fact, it’s driving towards me now, and the guy is cursing at me for calling you.” (Which he was, he couldn’t believe I was on the phone with them.)
The guy drove the jeep down one of the aisles. The cop said if I saw the dog left unattended again to call him back. I thanked him. My mom comes out at this point and since they never saw her, I had her look for the jeep. I saw the lady go inside. At 12:54, I called my mom on her cell. She saw the jeep, the guy was sitting in there with the dog, and then about a minute later, the lady walked outside with a bag of food. Finally mom and I went home. I felt good enough then too.
By this point in time, it had been about 30 minutes. Now if she had not walked out with her food then, if I had not gone inside, if I had not called animal control on them, what do you think would have happened with that dog?
I’m glad I did it. I would have felt horrible not doing anything.
Please, don’t ever leave any animal, or any child for that matter, alone in a car - especially on a hot day.
