Durham Bingo List

Jan 24, 2013 13:39

Another charity tournament in the books, and it was a successful tournament aside from Sunday's tank job.  4-1 in the EB, good enough for 2nd place and my money back, plus crept the TWL rating back over 1800, only to lose it right back by Sunday (I seem to be really good at doing this), with a 9-7, +1079 (+979 officially) 3rd place finish.  3-5 on the final day, losing two morning games by 1 and 5 points was really frustrating.  Going 2-6 against seeds 2-4 was also not what I wanted to do.  I just got hammered with X bombs all weekend (I think I drew the X 4 or 5 out of 16 ME games, and it seemed every game my opponent was using it for 40-60 points, one time for 86).  My drawing wasn't bad certainly, I did get lots of blanks and S's and I bingoed quite a bit (see the list after the cut), but apparently I needed to play much more defensively this weekend to turn around some of these losses.  And some others I think I played pretty damn well, it just wasn't enough.

My high spread with the near .500 record indicates to me I'm doing some things right and other things wrong, some of which I've already identified, Quackle will surely be instructive and perhaps I'll post some of these games online.  Lack of Collins also frustrated me, I posted this on Facebook about this but I had SHEETIER# 2x2 challenged off, and I bemoaned that EVIRATE#, ROYALET#, ALISOnS# (all in the same game), and DOILTER# were unplayable, all of which may have turned around games I eventually lost.  I also allowed GOITERED# to stay on in another game, because I couldn't remember if it was ours or not, and my opponent also had DIGESTER/REDIGEST for more points.  I won that game at least.  I am happy for Eric though, he's won every local tournament for the past year now, and he's just unstoppable anymore.  I want him to teach me how to draw high-prob bingoes all the time, but he had some sick finds this tournament like (N)ALOxONE against me.

I really did have a great time though, I will have lots of great memories from this past weekend.  Our little MLK shindig may be a Pixar movie compared to NOLA's Tarantino flick, but it's still a great atmosphere, and if you're ever in the mood for something a little different and wish to support a great cause (we raised another $5140 for the PBMT Family Support program at Duke this year), I heartily recommend coming out to join us next year.  David Klionsky and the Iyengars put on a well-run and organized tournament.  And if you want to eat and drink well (and cheaply!), Durham's got that in spades nowadays, it's not the city it was even 5 years ago.  Heck, we've already got an outing to Dame's Chicken and Waffles on the docket for next year.  Maybe I can even convince David to hold a Collins division.

Next month is EC; turnout so far is very disappointing, no other way to put it.  I'm just hoping at this point we have a quorum for Collins.  If not, I'll play TWL; D1 has some pretty solid and entertaining players already lined up, and I always do well at Ryan's tournaments (just did a quick tally, 102-51-1, 5 1sts and 3 2nds.)  Plus, Baoding and Cowfish will make it a good trip no matter what.

Wow that was longer than I expected.  Here are the bingoes, broken down by EB and ME.

*Eric actually overdrew on his opening rack, I turned up EIW and through the E back, he says after I play "Wrong choice" and bingoes.  Freakin' A.
**Thought I was setting up a clever out-in-2, when all I was doing was giving him an out-bingo.  Thankfully he had challenged PAIK earlier and I had enough of a cushion to still win the game, but that play and not blocking SNORERS (blocked DOURINES with 3 in the bag instead) probably cost me $30 bucks.
