Because the Phillies just beat you again! How do you like them apples?
Tonight's game was a complete experience for me because I actually got to watch the whole thing. I have to say I've always made fun of my dad for being superstitous but this is the NLDS so, forgive the pun, it's a whole different ballgame. I repeated everything I did last night when I came home from work in the exact same order and seated myself in the exact same spot once again wearing my Pat Burrell jersey and clutching my stuffed Phanatic.
Normally when I watch baseball on TV I'm more of a score checker as opposed to someone who watches the whole thing from start to finish. Not so tonight. My eyes were glued to my TV from the first pitch to the last at-bat.
The first inning was a real nail-biter. I always get nervous when they start Myers. He's such a headcase, but he's great when he settles down and gets into a groove but that's not always guaranteed. When he walked in the Brewers' first run I thought "Oh hell, we blew it." Thankfully I was made to eat those words. They tied the game and Myers came up to the plate and managed to get into the pitcher's head and shake him up enough to get walked. Philly crowds are raucous but I've never seen a crowd get that excited for a walk. Before I knew it there were still two outs but the bases were loaded and Victorino came up and hit a grand slam. My aunt and grandmother both got calls from me, and though the traditional greeting in this country is hello or so I've been told, they started with the phrase "Did you see that?!"
I got a little nervous in the 7th when the Brewers scored the 2nd run of the night off of Madson with Prince Fielder, their best hitter, coming up to bat. Manuel pulled one of the best strategic moves I've ever seen. Fielder's terrible against lefties so Manuel put Romero in with 2 outs, a man on second and a possible rally on his hands. Fielder broke his bat but to no avail. The 8th inning was a valiant effort but we weren't able to strengthen our lead. No matter. Lidge did the job in the 9th and now we are only one game away from history in the making. God I love baseball!
Oh and by the way, my grim words from the first inning taste fantastic and I'm washing them down with a nice victory Grey Goose and cran. I love my Phils but I also know them well enough not to get too confident. I'm trilled nonetheless about tonight's victory but I still will remain cautiously optimistic which is an improvement. Hey, you can't always be Miss Gloom and Doom. Like the man said "Can't rain all the time."
PS 500 cool points and awesometastic honors to whoever guesses where that line is from.
