Packing up my room, bit by bit. It's always strange to see how one's life can fit into boxes.
Distracting myself from fretting about packing&stuff by doing a lot of food prep for moving. It's not like I can never get groceries again (and winter quarter is really when things'll get bad) so it's not like I really have to worry too much right now. On the other hand, though, if I can start the process of stocking up for winter now, I'll be ahead of the game later.
Today I have:
Chopped up and froze about 4 cups of Rhubarb.
Sliced up 1 quart of Strawberries and put them into the dehydrator.
Made oodles of Basil-Parmesan pesto w/ Garlic and Pine Nuts.
Picked more blackberries! :)
Tomorrow I'm probably going to:
Dehydrate 1 pint of Oyster Mushrooms in the machine.
Make a Cilantro/Garlic pesto.
Mix up some homemade granola and/or oatmeal.
Do something with the blackberries.
I was so pleased to see the rhubarb at the Farmers' Market. I wasn't expecting to see any and when I did I figured, what the heck, it was probably my last chance to get fresh rhubarb this season so I bought some.
The strawberries are on hour 4 of their dehydrating. The apartment smells faintly of strawberries. I'm hopeful that it turns out well, I am reluctant to dehydrate anything else before I see how well the machine works. The information I've found says that the strawberries will take 6 to 16 hours to be ready. It's such a big range, slightly frustrating but that's the nature of the beast.
Wow, there are so many ripe blackberries out there on the canes; some of them were so ripe they were falling apart when I picked them. Too too many berries I couldn't reach, sadly, but I got at least as many as last time. I'm not sure what I want to do with the blackberries. Making into jam, freezing or dehydrating are the options. hmm. *ponders*
I love cilantro (yes, I know I am weird). So I've been trying to figure out a way to preserve some to take with me, short of drying (because dried cilantro just tastes weird). I googled up "cilantro pesto" and found several intriguing recipes. Tomorrow I'll try it out.
