dubbing excitement
last night, just as i was walking out the door at 5 (last man standing, too), we got a delivery for a rush job. turns out they're audiocassettes that need to be redubbed with timecode (so, dubbing from cassette tape to cassette tape), which is something i haven't done yet. coworker T had some excessively complicated instructions that were also pretty fuzzy on what was recording to what channel, etc., and coworker T was saying, "couldn't we just do [tape deck] to [other tape deck]?" so i just called BoF (he's out of town) and had him walk me through it. sure enough, CT's instinct was right, and that's what he had me do.
it basically involves wiring from one tower to the other and back, only he had me feeding the generated timecode from tower 1 (recording from) to tower 2 (recording to), which is fine, and then sending it BACK to tower 1 for playback, which is not fine and kept fucking up the readout. now, occasionally the timecode generator gets a wild hair and will give you nonsensical numbers, but usually once you clear it out it settles down and gives you the right numbers. this time, after getting nonsense twice and then clearing it out again, i looked at the wires, went "OH!" and pulled out the timecode in wire and popped it into the corresponding spot on tower 2 (which also has a timecode generator and reader). worked like a charm.
so, uh, go me -- again -- for figuring out stuff on my own.
