Art wangst and a Merlin rec

Nov 15, 2011 13:04

I took the weekend off from writing to rediscover how bad I am at inking. My big bang is due on Friday and I am going to have to make some questionable decisions on how to handle the background and text without digital means.

Bleah. I'm revisiting Dave McKean's work on Arkham Asylum for inspiration on simple but effective atmosphere, which is probably unspeakably arrogant, but I'm grasping at straws here.

When I gave that up as a bad job, I found this: Edit the Sad Parts and read the whole thing in one sitting. God, if I could write half so well, I'd be content.

It's a story about FTM Merlin dealing with living in a world where he doesn't quite fit. And it resonates so well; the author captured what it's like to have the things that mark you as different take over your entire life, and how it skews everything until you learn how to deal, accept and grow. I have no words. This fic is full of self-doubt, pain and tenacious hope, with relationships and characterizations so painfully real and flawed that I never felt like I was reading about concepts rather than people. <3
