It was a grand and glorious adventure that delved delightfully into the realms of geek, nerd, and dorkdom.
Cookies were baked..
Bags were packed..
Zombie Nix and I were good to go..
Zombie Nix even offered to drive..
he's helpful like that..
but..
he is a zombie, and thus can not be trusted to drive
To the passenger side, Zombie Nix!
Zombie Nix wasn't all that pleased with being booted away from the wheel..
but.. too bad!
We headed out at around 7 30 a.m.
I had my orientation meeting at 10 am, and I wanted to be there well before I had to. Besides, if I had waited another minute I would have been clawing at the walls to get out.
In the meeting Zombie Nix and I were given our badges and assignments. We were given a two hour block of badge checking at checkpoint 5. Badge checking seemed to boil down to ogling hawt chicks, and the man that invented the lanyard should be praised since it seems to hang down right into the breastage area.
Zombie Nix!!
Where is your badge!
You can't go around without your badge!
O.k., that's better..
but keep a vigilant eye, my flesh rending friend!
The two hours went by exceedingly quickly and the volunteer staff guy Micheal Frey stopped by a couple times to make sure everything was alright, and then we chatted a bit. Another guy came by and we talked about KoDT. Nix even attempted to speak with female people!
But, my replacement arrived.. she was like.. uber cute!
So, needless to say, I shuffled off rather quickly.
Besides, I had a list... nay.. a cornucopia of panels I wished to attend..
thus.. off I went in search of knowledge, power, adventure, and chicks in mini-skirts.
First off, was Gaming History with Bill Bodden, Matt Forbeck, Matt McElroy, and Aaron Pavao
I thought I had been able to snap a picture of it
It was very interesting.. and..
I'm realizing that I am not without quite a bit of knowledge in this regard. Certainly there are many that know more than I do, however, I am noticing that what I know out-weighs what I don't know.
The panel was done well, but it seemed to draw in only a few people.. I think that was because it was still quite early in the convention. Most people were either arriving or gaining their bearings still.
After that Victor, (Nathan?), and I went off in search of food..
Unfortunately, the location of the hotel is not as well endowed as Madison Radison is with restaurants in walking distance. We ended up going to Denny's..
it was Denny's..
We still had a bit of time so we wandered over the gaming room, where Victor convinced me to forgo a panel on Game Creation.. cause he is a big, evil, meanie that doesn't want me to use my imagination.
I'd been wanting to play a game of Arkham Horror for quite a long time, but never got the chance because
1) I don't own a copy and no one in my family seems to understand me when I say 'buy me this if you want to get me a gift'
2) the few people I know that do own a copy never have enough time to play out a game
Here's Zombie Nix and I playing a game of Arkham Horror with Victor Raymond,
badger2305 , Nathan (something), and some other guy that was really nice (although he was really tall). If you haven't played Arkham Horror yet, go out and get a copy. It is a fantastically fun game where players.. now get this.. work together! I know, what a weird and wacky concept.
I was able to dash away and meet up with Matt Forbeck. I had won a few bids off of him on ebay, and he was gracious enough to save me quite a bit in shipping by bringing them with him. Not only that, but he then tracked me down to pass them over.. I would have been happy meeting up with him. Very nice guy, and as I told him, I am a huge fan of many of his games. Brave New World: dystopian world with super-heroes, Deadlands: spaghetti western and horror mixed together, Dragonstar: d&d in space.. only not as weird as Spelljammer, along with a slew of books (18 at last count I believe)
That is Zombie Nix with Silver Age Sentinels, Rocketville (boardgame), Imperial Supply (dragonstar supplement), and an adventure of some sort..
all brand new..
felix_archon is working on making a character for Silver Age Sentinels.. so I sent him a pic and a message the my copy of the game was just hand delivered by one of the gaming industries most prolific and well known individuals..
I believe his response was "that sounds awesome, man! great job" or something very similar.. but might have also bordered on "u suck, u fucknard"
After that it was time for...
THE ODDCON ROOM PARRRRRTTTTTAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!
woot!
major woots!
Here, we see the Janet person..
she is quite nice..
the Janet Person wears a cthulhu hipbag..
Here we see Brian Curley and Paul Weisner..
that is Paul sober, by the way
both are very cool guys..
if you happen to make it to OddCon.. you'll get to meet them in person..
they both might even be cajoled into talking about Firefly.. if you prod them enough
Here we see uber-hawt-librarian chick..
she is the host of the OddCon parties of awesomeness
we also see Paul's back..
and in the corner..
we can see the twin jugs of Green and Blue stuff
I spent the next couple of hours getting shitfaced being social..
I then went off to Geek Dating.. a sort of how-to guide to not being a socially outcast loser with the arms of Popeye the Sailor a socially outcast dink that has the dating life of a repressed hermit.
well.. that is all for day one of Geek.Kon..
I wandered off to bed around 1-ish..
I think..
Zombie Nix did most of the drinking, but it would have been rude to let him drink alone..
Nix
