Odd-Con Ten.. part 1

Apr 19, 2010 21:11

wow.. where to start on so many days of utter and supreme geeked out awesomeness?

Tuesday night I left home, picked up anime girl, and headed down to Madison for my normal game gathering.  Unfortunately, this was the week that the GM could not be there due to his work so we once again played Silent Death.  I said it before and I'll say it again, it's a very good table-top miniature game.

When you don't play it a lot.. the first few rounds can go a bit slow as you get used to the roll-to-hit figuring.. but.. after a while it goes supremely easy.  Like most table-top miniature games.. I think it would best if a game is played over a long period of time so that one can take many breaks from it, thus avoiding the inevitable burn-out that usually occurs after long-stretches.

After that, headed to anime girls place to crash out..
now.. before anyone thinks of anything fun dirty or naughty..
she has an extra room in her house..
having had a full day of work getting things ready for my not being there for a week I called it an early night at 12-ish

Wednesday we spent hanging out and I baked some oatmeal cookies.  I dazzled anime girl with a bit of culinary abilities at dinner when I made us some stir fry for dinner, showed her some of the miniatures I've painted, and then we gamed a bit..
it was a good day

Thursday..
Thursday I zipped down to Madison so I could start getting ready for Odd-Con.  I hit a few bookstores to pick up stuff for the various famous people to sign..
got three books for Harry Turtledove (very good reads) and a rp book by Monte Cook..
I swung by the hotel at 11 50 am (ish) after having been told to meet up with people at noon..

at around 12 15 (ish) other people started getting there, and we began getting the con-suite set up
for the uninitiated to gaming conventions, a con-suite is that treasured oasis in chaos where one can go for free food, snacks, and drink (drink being soda or water of course.. though.. not always)
this year..
we separated the drinks from the food..
and..
AND!!!

had a freakin' soda fountain!!!
yes.. a soda fountain!

now.. you might be thinking..
what if a gamer doesn't like either fresh pepsi.. fresh diet pepsi.. fresh sprite.. or fresh mountain dew?
well then..
they can have either coke, diet coke, diet caffiene free coke, three types of arizona iced tea, root beer, four different types of sparkling water, lemonade and several other soft drinks on top of all of that

most other conventions.. have a few 2 liters tossed out

we put down a plastic tape thing to save the carpet from getting dirty and thus being charged a 'cleaning' bill

we then worked on the main con-suite part..
tons..
tons and tons of food

yes.. that is over 700 hot dogs.. and fresh from the factory hot dog buns..

this doesn't really show all the food that was stored and not even able to be set out..
nor does it show the plethora of pizza's that could be set out..
nor the home made sloppy joe's..

now.. most con-suites I have visited in the past have had maybe.. some chips and a couple pieces of fruit
daisho-con had some rice and some soda's..
but..

an entire room literally filled.. wall to wall with free food?
not just free food..
but healthy alternatives to regular snacks?
and..
not to tweak my own baking ability.. which.. many of my readers are quite aware..
but also and entire tables worth of fresh cookies.. free from preservatives?

we then went to Olive Garden for the Odd-Con Guest of Honor Dinner..
Tobias Buckell was there
very interesting writer.. with an even more interesting life story
Harry Turtledove was also there..
another writer for those not familiar with his work..
very shy guy.. very smart guy.. very nice guy
Monte "I wrote D&D 3rd edition so fuck you" Cook (it should be noted that Monte Cook never actually used that nickname)
was not there sadly..

but good food was had..
ok.. it was olive garden..
so it was o.k. food made awesome by great company..

I was quite near Tobias, Brian Curly (a local gamer and super nice guy), some guy whose name escapes me (I'm terribly sorry for that.. and after contacting him his name will be added), Paul Weisner and his wife..
Brian and Paul are both gamers and both run the convention itself..
that was pretty much everyone in conversational distance..
Harry Turtledove was at the other end..

it was a good day and a good night..
I then crashed at a friend named Alex's place (here-forth known as ogre-d00d)..
we played a few playstation 2 games.. and then I started in on playstation 1's Front Mission 3
much fun was had mocking it in psuedo-stereotypical Japanese voices

we then crashed out after I played with ogre-d00d's very friendly pussy cat

I awoke late the next day.. it was easily 9 am, after we went to bed (in separate rooms) around 5 ish.. so I hopped onto Front Mission 3 for a short while before we headed off to finish up setting up convention stuff..

well..
that was Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday..
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be add later so that the blogs aren't 9 pages long
