The first apartment is smaller than the second one, but *I* like it better because it suits my needs better. I got there at the same time as 2 girls who were considering taking it as roommates. They took 2 applications (one each, and it turns out they were the last one he had on him) and left. I looked around, had enough time to really fall in love with the place (there's more cabinets in the kitchen than I'll ever know what to do with), and asked a bunch of questions and got to know the manager better... and when he went to grab an application for me, he couldn't find any. I was still there when the 2 girls came back with their applications filled out.
When I saw him today, he accepted my application, but refused to take my money to have my credit check done because he didn't want to waste my money. As two prospective tenants (the roommates and someone else who had been by earlier) had turned in applications on Saturday, I guess he felt obligated to run their credit checks and determine their eligibility first.
It's kind of odd. I remember when I was apartment hunting about 5 years ago -- no place would consider an apartment rented until they received a (refundable) holding deposit (which would be applied against the first month's rent and the security deposit). Until receiving the deposit, they'd continue showing the place and accepting applications. Now EVERYWHERE I've looked has put emphasis on the application, and I haven't heard a single word about holding deposits.
I wonder whether the laws have changed on that point... whether they're not allowed to take holding deposits anymore.
Anyway, I just put in an application for a tiny apartment in Long Beach. It's small, no dishwasher, parking isn't gated or covered, and it's a lower income neighborhood... and laundry is the coin-op around the corner... ... but it's about $380 less than what my rent is going up to in August.
Right now, I'm just trying to figure out whether the furniture I own will fit, and whether the furniture I'd be acquiring (from you) would fit... and if it won't, then I'll have a very valid reason for withdrawing my application. ... But for that cheap (And I believe there's no minimum on the lease term, but I could be wrong), it's worth the serious consideration and the $30 application fee just to have it as a real option, even if only short term. It *is* cute, and has lots of drawers and shelves and cabinets and stuff... ... heh

I'll give them a call in the morning and let them know that my furniture won't fit, so if it's not too late I'd like to withdraw my application. I'd call now, but it's 9:30pm on a Sunday night, and you never know how early people go to sleep... heh.
And tomorrow afternoon I'll start bugging the manager about that first apartment. I'm also scheduled to see something in Silverlake after work tomorrow... so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...
