Since I've been slacking in regards to updating this, I'll pick up where my last post left off.
The BBQ was fun, I enjoyed seeing everyone. I left early though (around 8:30), because I was pretty tired from work.
Thursday and Friday were nice, because I was working at a house on the street right above mine, which not only meant a longer lunch break because of no travel time, but my mom stopped by and brought us lemonade. I love my mom =) Here's a picture of the view from the job sight. Man, I love the sight of those hills.
Saturday I went to the wedding of two of my friends, Brian and Bailey. The highlight for me was when Jeff, the best man and Brian's brother, fished the wedding ring out of a cracker jack box. I was cracking up, especially as the box was passed down the line of groomsmen who each took a handful to munch on. Pure genius I tell you.
Sunday was pretty busy. Went to church and Aflredo, the pastor of the Mexican church in Tijuana we partner with, spoke. It was a good message. I definitely admire his heart for God. The only thing that made me sad is that while that church has a passion for telling people the good news of the gospel, they never seem to tell them the bad news first. I don't believe someone can truly understand the gospel without understanding their spiritual condition first (I kind of had the same feelings about a book called "Bruchko" I read recently).
Right after that service I dashed over to Mandi's house where the church we planted a year ago meets. The home church atmosphere was definitely different from what I'm used to, it was more like a Bible study. I enjoyed it, and while there are a couple things about the format that I would probably disagree with, I think it's definitely closer to how believers should fellowship. I might talk about that more another time.
I had to leave there early, because there was a missions meeting that I had to go to. The missions meeting was for the missionary students our church to let those in charge of missions how we're doing and what our plans are. I had a good time, and I was glad to be able to share with them my passion for translation work, and how going to Israel was to prepare me for that and wasn't a deviation from my missionary training.
It also impressed on me again how blessed I am to go to a church that has such a passion for missions. I don't think I've ever met any mission student that has a church financially supporting them, not to mention having the same level of encouragement they give us.
Monday I worked with another friend from church, Eric, as Friday was my last day working for Tom until the 25th because he's having surgery on his elbow.
Eric had asked how work was going at the wedding Saturday, and when I told him that I wasn't working this week he said he could use an extra hand Monday if I was interested (at least I thought he only meant Monday, but I'm getting ahead of myself). I was happy to have the extra work, especially as the rest of the week I'd still be free to take care of things I needed to get done before the Mexico mission trip the thirty-first.
Well, Monday rolled around and I was off bright and early. Eric's owns a plumbing business, and we were working a construction site of about nine homes where we connected all of the home's water supply and installed some deck drains. Fortunately most of what I was doing was priming and gluing cpvc together, which is about as far as my knowledge of plumbing goes. I think by the end of that day my hands were half covered with glue and primer (primer, for your information, stings like none other when you get it in an open wound). You have to love the ability God gave the human body to heal. I had a bunch of skin peeled off the palm of my right hand because of the glue, but it's only been a couple days and it's completely healed.
After I got home I showered and got ready for my church's college group. Brian and Bailey normally lead it, but since they're gone on their honeymoon Brian asked me to fill in for him. I didn't really do much. It's a great group, and all I did was guide the conversation a little. We were looking at 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 and we talked about reconciliation and what it means to be ambassadors for Christ, which brought a good discussion.
After that was over I was pretty well done in. I had been busy non-stop from 5:30 that morning to 9:30 that night, and so when I hit the sack I was very much looking forward to sleeping in.
6:07 AM Tuesday morning my dad came in to my room to let me know Eric called to say we'd be leaving at 6:30 instead of 6:45 today. As you can imagine, I was rather excited about being woken up about working on a day that I thought I wasn't. I got up, half-awake, and called Eric to let him know that I thought it was a one day job, and I had told my mom I was going to do yardwork for her today. He was cool about it, and said I could just start back up tomorrow, to which I think I groggily muttered ok without thinking. Later I realized what I said and I called him again to let him know why I couldn't work this week and how I thought it was only a one day job. Eric's a nice guy so he was understanding about the whole mix-up.
Well, now that I spent the last hour typing this up I should probably go get cracking on yard work. I'll update more later.
