Plan C: setting sun on the rebus
Rationale: I'm feeling a little bit green around the edges on psychoanalysis, but all the post-doc topics are headed in that direction so perhaps it would be wise to up-skill and use part of the time to publish more in the psychoanalysis-friendly journals.
- Finish PhD before June, 2008
- Retain contract/sessional work with Griffith University for staff level access to library resources
(consider wedging myself into one of the research centres as an adjunct)
- Enrol in Masters of Psychoanalytic Studies at Deakin part-time to feed off interest base in elective offerings
- Possibly claim advanced credit given PhD research area, i.e. do I really need to wade through another introduction to Lacan and Freud?!
- Publish in psychoanalysis-friendly journals, possibly by reworking assignments considered decent by Deakin assessors.
Outcome: a Masters, a high frequency publishing mêlée, more HECS debt, a better post-doc application profile, and ultimately easier (although by no means assured) access to pure research career.
Plan C: truncated version
Rationale: identical as before but with compressed timeframe of 1.5 years
- Finish PhD before June, 2008
- Take out student loan
- Enrol in M.Psy at Deakin full-time
- Apply for advanced credit
- Devote self to Freudian vigil and Lacanian self-aggrandisement
- Use silly assignments as publishing possibilities and vice-á-versa
Outcome: a fast Masters, a less frequent publishing mêlée, a slightly better post-doc application profile, less 'HECS' debt, more 'credit' debt, a better post-doc application profile, etc

I think the first plan seems like a better move. But such are the currents of the time. It's this or a graduate entry law degree, which, no matter how I rearrange it, strikes me as a steam-roller to intellectual adventurousness until the fourth or fifth year. Apparently I can 'stack' electives on at will if I'm part-time with Deakin, which would reduce the amount of time I would need to spend doing the Masters...
