Why must art theory be so easy to read?!

I love reading October books, that delectible imprint of the MIT Press. Their layout is beautiful, a simple delight to leaf through. And it accentuates the lesson of the American short-fiction renaissance from the 1980s: It's all about the sentences!

Of course, if you read Amy Hempel, Raymond Carver, or Mary Robison you're probably ruined already. But none of these people are published by October. Think how strange it would be to see minimalism alongside the uncovered desires of surrealism. Think how madenning it would be... L'amour fou!
